NEW ORLEANS TRACK DRIES COURSE DELIGHTS HORSEMEN BY ITS SPEEDY RECOVERY FROM A DRENCHING RAIN. Big Preparation for Saturday— The Governor, the Mayor, Speaker Champ Clark and Marse Henry Watterson Invited to View the Racing. New Orleans, La.. December 29. — Horsemen todav were given a remarkable exhibition of the drying-out quality of the Fair Grounds track. After yesterdays hard drenching, it was fully expected that it would be several days before the track would again be dry and great was the amazement when the ellipse showed little trace of yesterdays lieavy deluge. The only inconvenience that the owners experienced arose from the fact that they were compelled to work their representatives around the "dogs" that were placed around the inner l art of the track to prevent it from being cut up by the hoofs of the hundreds of horses . at exercise. A good track means that the most of ■ the good horses will race on the opening day. The Business Mens Racing Association has planned ou an extensive scale for the initial dav nud have extended invitations to uianv notables. Among those invited are Governor Hall. Mayor ; Martin Behrman. Hon. Champ Clark and Hon. Henry Watterson. The latter two notables are at present visiting here. The licensing of trainers and jockeys and the issuing of badges to horsemen took" up most of manager Joseph A. Murphys time and that of his statl at the course. Few applications were held up and these only to enable the officials to satisfy the-n-twlves that the applicants are in thoroughly good standing in every part of the country. "It is a 1 remarkably clean list of applicants."" said Judge Murphy, in commenting on the number who will receive their licenses. Never before at any winter track and on rare occasions only during the height of the summer on the bigger New Vork tracts • have a better lot of riders been available. The list includes almost every high-priced rider in the country.
