BIG DAY AT NEW ORLEANS FINE RACING VIEWED BY THE GOVERNOR, MAYOR AND OTHER DIGNITARIES. J. J. Lillis Defeats Bringhurst and Pan Zareta — J. W. Schorr Wins Two Races — Celesta Not at Her Best — Butwell Retires. Now Orleans. La.. January 15. — Todays good a rd at the Fair Grounds was productive of the liest sport of the meeting and its decision was witnessed by another record-breaking crowd. The distinguished guests included Governor Hall. Mayor Uehruiau and Thomas Taggart of Indiana. The weather was still bracing, but the track had im-•proved greatly and. while not at its best, was regarded as fast. Two handicaps, one at three-ipiarlcrs of a mile and the other at a mile, were the features and were contested by some of the best racers in local training. In the shorter race lan Zareta and Bringhurst were carded and the meeting between the two was looked forward to with keen interest. Both suffered defeat, for the vastly-improved J. J. Lillis won somewhat easily in 1:12. which equalled the track record established by Isoeit last winter. lan Zareta ran her usual -.insistent race, but found bar weight too much to concede and Bringhurst. after having shown the most s|ieed until in the last sixteenth, beat her out for second place. John W. Schorr furnished the winner of tlie mile handicap in Dick Williams, which ran Impressively in spite of suffering much from interference. The result of the race was placed in Jeopardy when Judy took him sharply across Indolence in the last eighth. but the claim of foul that Indolences rider made was not allowed. Indolence had previously caused considerable interference to Dick Williams. Celesta showed she is far from her top form, for she retired after going a half mile and got third money only because Grumpy |Uit badly. The Schorr establishment made it a double for the afternoon when its recent acquisition. Syrian, won the fifth in a hard drive with Fair Helen and Mockery. C. W. Clark and a party of seven arrived this morning from San Mateo, and will remain for some time to witness the racing. Jockey W. Itrsurl. who came from Bl Paso, made his local debut on the Wiugtield racers during the afternoon. Jockey Kutvell announced today his retirement from the saddle for this winter. He will depart at once for his home in Jacksonville. Increasing weight is given as his reason for resting until .spring. Commencing Tuesday. January 18, the three-pound allowance for geldings will be discontinued. This is to conform to the new rule of the Jockey Club. Following the running of the last race. George Phillips claimed Klv Home for 1916.sh00 and Charles E. Preiser took Transport for . Pfeiffer also secured Hertodano at private sale this morning.
