DOROTHY DEAN THE WINNER DEFEATS CELESTA IN THE NEW ORLEANS MAIN RACE OF THE DAY. Fair Helen Rims a Surprising Race — Bedtime Stories Wins in a Canter — Eastern Selling Race Rule Not Adopted. New Orleans. La., Fchruarv Hi.— .1. W. Fullers Dorothy Dean proved best in the mile race Which featured this afternoons card at the Fair Grounds The Filler mare outstayed Celesta in a sharp drive niul won by a half length. Greenwood easily heat Rifle Shooter, the only other starter, for* third UlOlley. Fair Helen proved herself a speedy sprinter when she overhauled Presumption and Hester Irvnne in the three-quarters dash and won somewhat easily. Twelve sprinters of fair class ci.nti-sted this race and ran in close order for the entire wax. William Hurleys Bedtime Stories again demonstrated that she is ahoy,, the average by impressively scoriae; over a good hand of youngsters. Todays attendance was again of generous proportions ■■d the sport was interesting and thoroughly enjoyed. The report that Judge Murphy would put in force the recently |iassed eastern rule in respect to dis-trihution of the surplus money when winner- are hid up in selling races, was erroneous. He regards the method ill vogue at the Fair Grounds as ideal and will continue it. This rule may he adopted in Kentucky this year. .Ft k Slieohan. who was asked to identify himself with the Mobile racing project, declined the position offered when he learned that W. II. Mehera was to have charge of the management. Nothing further is being heard about the proposed meeting to he held there. Charles F. Price, who served as presiding steward at Juarez until his departure from there Monday, arrived here last night and was m visitor at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. He stated that the Juarez meeting was in a flom i-liing condition and that there probably would be an extension. Mr. Price is no.v en route t.i Naples. Fla.. where he will visit Messrs. Beer go M. Hendrie and John Ilai-h-nieister and do some fishing. He expressed great sitis.iction over the magnitude of the race meeting here. Charles F. Grainger and P. J. Haulou will return to Ixmisville tomorrow. Mr. Grainger was greatly impressed with the conduct of the sport here and the liberal patronage accorded it. He will, it is expected, offer a resolution in the Keutucky State Racing Commission, of which he is a member, to adopt the sealed method | ertaining to bidding on selling race winners in vogue here. He is also neatly taken with the method of cnecking weights in the paddock before the jockeys mount their respective horses. For the first time during the present meeting there was pronounced dissent from the judges pfav-► iug when they gave Surpassing the verdict in the final race over Kneelet. The latter was apparently winning when T. Roomer, his rider, became careless and got nipped ont in the last stride. Following the fifth race the haltcrmcn were busy. Huil] Hera bid Goodwood, the winner, up to $.S05. He eras bought in. Fade anted was claimed by c. I. Worihington for Ssoo and Gabrio was claimed by George Phillips for MM, Kneelet was claimed by Janus Mac.Manus from the last race for 1916.sh110. Track Superintendent Charles Nolte of Douglas Park, at Louisville, was among todays visitors. The horse Triholo reverted back to his former owner, I.. J. Carey, today, he having par/chased him from Find Hera. It is expected that Saratoga will not be a starter in the Merchants Stakes, to be run next Satur-day on account ■•! continued leg rouble. George Phillips claimed Phil I ngar out of the sci .lid race for 6860. District Aitornev C. c. Lnsenberg, anent a proposal by the preachers to lake I he alleged violations of the I.ocke law before the grand jury, made this statement today: "Nothing has been put before me. 1 do not contemplate calling the grand .jury in extra session. The grand jury meets in regular session February 2T». 1 will consider any com-I taints fur action at thai line." The. agitation begun last Sunday by many ministers against racing will probably gain no beadwaj for the present, as Rabbi Heller and three other ministers of New Orleans will withdraw publicly and formally their support of thfa latest campaign against the race track. ■Fork-eats this morale*; over a fast track were: Alley -Three-quarters in 1:17-.-..
