OWNER MCDOWELLS DAY TO SHINE. America First in the Rich Cincinnati Trophy, While Paramount and Sister Susie Also Win for Him. Cincinnati, O., July S. T. C. McDowells good filly America scored this afternoon over Harry Kelly after a well sustained stretch struggle and took tin; 1916.sh,020 net that went to the winner of the Cincinnati Trophy. In addition, the owner received a costly and handsome silver service. Berlin was third and High Gear fourth, which saved for the latter his stakes. The four were separated by half lengths. They were always in the thick of contention, suffered no interference and furnished a thrilling struggle. Harry Kelly was on his best behavior and it required only a minutes delay at the post before they were on their way. The Schorr colt, despite his 127 pounds, took the lead at once and, making a terrific pace, it appeared on the stretch turn as if he would hold sway for the entire way, but he tired in the last sixteenth when America challenged and near the end the McDowell filly drew out and won going away. The fillys victory was a popular one and she crossed the finish line amid a terrific din. which trebled in volume when the band, immediately after she passed the finish, rendered "America," bringing the occupants of the stand to their, feet witli doffed hats. This was essentially a McDowell-Martin day at Latonia, for. in addition to winning the rich Trophy, Martin rode two other winners from the McDowell stable in Paramount and Sister Susie. The former captured the maiden race for two-vear-dds, while Sister Susie led home a band of fairlv useful sprinters. She was entered for 00, but was advanced to ,005 and retained. The excellent card this afternoon was responsible for bringing out the full strength of racing devotees. The sport was high class, two handicaps serving as secondary features to the big race. W. H. linkers Lady Rotha won the mile and one-eighth handicap in somewhat easy fashion over Embroidery and Water Witch. Twenty-two carloads of racers have been booked for Hawthorne and the railroads have promised to get the consignments on their way to Chicago by Tuesday night. Judge E. C. Hopper was among todays visitors having come over from his home in Hustouville. John B. Dillon. Sr., formerly secretary of the Latonia Jockey Club, was an interested spectator this afternoon. T. P. Hayes and J. II. Baker were additional owners, who this afternoon signified intention of racing at Hawthorne during the coming meeting. Tlie program book covering the first five days of the Hawthorne meeting was received this afternoon. No purse of less than 00 is scheduled and several are of greater amount. The stakes show a goodly number of entries, including some of the best racers in the country. The rule which provides that the excess money above the selling price be added to the purses to be raced for on the second day following caused favorable comment as it means more money to horsemen in ease of selling race activities. The exodus of owners from here to Chicago will begin tomorrow when the AVchor .t Ward and W. V. Walsh consignments will depart. The latter bought Miss Fannie by private sale this morning and she will be shipped with the others. Luke Le Blond disposed of Opportunity this morning to W. AVoodward. The colt sustained a knee injury this morning, according to report, and this was largely responsible for the sale. J. A. Gibsons racers will be shipped tonight to AVindsor, where they will begin their Canadian campaign. After Casey Jones had scored his fourth successive victory, by leading the others home in the second race, he was advanced from an entered price of ,300 to ,S00 and bought by J. H. Goodman. J. S. Wallace will serve as handicappcr and associate judge for the remainder of the meeting. The place was made vacant by the departure of El Jasper for Chicago tonight. J. W. Uuldblatt purchased King Dick this afternoon.
