DULL DAY AT HAWTHORNE CARD GIVEN OVER ENTIRELY TO SELLING PLATERS AND FINISHES TAME. Delira and Solid Rock Take the First Two Races at Long Odds Milbrey a Winner Talk of an Extension of the Meeting. Tlioro wis no equine brilliancy to tlio Hawthorne racing yostorelay. the entire program being given over to the selling phit.-r variety strictly, all thesis dashes having selling clause at tachnicnts of low value. Vpscts were frequent, all the favorites being ilowneil. The sport was entirelv devoid of any outstanding features, the eontests being routine in tlie main and the finishes tame. The various winners could be foreshadowed long before reaching the hist sixteenth. The featureless card caused a decreased attendance am! betting activities was also considerably lessened. tumors of an extension after Saturday again gained wide circulation and several horsemen were busy securing signers to a petition to have the meeting continued. The petition will be presented to the management and a meeting for tonight has been called by the promoters to discuss the advisability of a continuance. Much opposition to an extension is evident and many aver that to go on after Saturday with the racing, would jeopardise prospects for a racing bill. Tin? continuation, if one is decided on. will bo under auspices other than those of the Illinois Jockey Club, it is said. The overthrow of favorites began in the opener when thirteen ordinary ones made the contest, with Jim Wnkoly a pronounced choice. He was led home by Dehra. which had smart backing in a quiet way at long odds. She was extremely lucky in escaping the inevitable crowding and jamming that comes on the first turn in all big fields and. favored by her light weight, sin; managed to race into the lead at the half-mile post ami to hold Jim Wakely safe for the rest of the- race to win bv a comfortable margin. rienron landed third place, after having overcome considerable interference. Tlie inconsistent anionic was the offending favorite in the second raw; and her showing was the more aggravated because of her f::ilure to get a place aniong the poor band that opposed her. The winner turned up in Solid Hock, -which showed a creditable performance in leaving the barrier in the rear to go all around the others and win from the weakly ridden Biddy, which showed the most early speed and had the earmarks of a winner until in the last sixteenth. W. E. Applegatos Milbrey was relegated to second choice; in favor of Juvenile in the third race and again the supposed "wise sot" wen; astray in their calculations, for Milbrey turned up a handy winner over Iturbank, with juvenile far back in the ruck. Milbrey and Iturbank both showed a high order of early speed and raced away from the others in the first three-eighths. Juvenile had gotten away in a tangle, but was decisively outpaced throughout. In the stretch racing Milbrey drew clear and Iturbank had to sustain a hard drive to retain second place over Deckhand. Not to be outdone by the other favorites. Liberator, which had not shown nnv great form since leaving the T. C. McDowell stable, brought, up a loser when he succumbed quite easily to Shine, which showed to her best form by sprinting into a good lead at once and leading under restraint for the entire race to win as her rider pleased. Liberator, after making a slow Ixginniiig and losing much ground, came fast in the last eighth to head out Itorax for second place. J. -. Welch was the medium of a mild coup in the fifth race and made good, but onlv after he had been forced to be ridden out hard, in the Jast eighth to outstay Morristown. The latter came wide into the stretch, costing him considerable grouiel. but for which he might have won. Ha Penny was best of the others. Marjorie I, gave the diminutive T. Hunt :m opportunity to land his second winning mount of the afternoon when she raced home in advance of Thanksgiving in the closing race. Thanksgiving was much the best and was taken all over the track, but finished like a rocket and was goi.ig two strides to Marjorie D.s one at the end. Just Iteil, the favorite, suffered from interference on the first turn and did well to outstay the notional Husky Lad, which sulked for most of the way. After the finish of the last race. Marjorie I, entered for 00, was advanced Sin! by H. 1. Dickerson, but. her owner retained her with the customary advance. Fred Auerbach, former general manager of the Charleston, S. C, track, was among the visitors and will remain several days witnessing the sport. Mr. Auerbach has some hopes of a revival of racing in Jacksonville, Fin., some time in the near future. W. I. Heed sold at private terms the horse Iturwood to 1aul Itutler. Jr.. owner of Oak ISrook Farm, near Chicago. The horse will bo used for breeding ami improving polo pouic.i. The neighboring farmers will also be given opportunity to send their mares to his court at the small fee of S5. The program book of the Saratoga meeting was distributed to owners. There; will be a fairly big array going to the Spa track next Sunday. Gullahcr Itros. contemplates splitting their stable and taking their best racers to Saratoga to be campaigned. Presiding steward C. J. Fitz Gerald announced his intention in the afternoon of departing from Chicago next Saturday and reaching New York after a brief visit with his folks in Ontario. Failure to furnish satisfactory identification for the aged man; Foible, carded starter in the opening dash, caused her to be ordered withdrawn. Jefferson Livingston during the afternoon sent jockey Kederis a message notifying him of his release to the stable. Kederis is at present at his home in Washington, where he will remain until the opening of the fall Kentucky racing. Mr. Ijiving-ston will depart today for New York, where, after a brief stay, he will go on to Saratoga for the racing there. He will have both his strings :it the Spa this year, those under the care of ?iermaii Itrandt having been shipped from Latouiji last Saturday, and those in charge of Mose Geilelhlatt, which are now being raced at Kmpire City, will be shipped to Saratoga next Sunday.
