NOTES OF THE TURF FROM ABROAD. M. Jean Stern has leased Lynhams former training stables at Gouvieux. Newton, his trainer, has already taken up his quarters in the new establishment. W. Earl, the well-known jockey, who put his hip out and had his pelvis twisted at the; last meeting at Newbury, through being thrown off Itaronvale at the starting post, underwent another slight operation recently. Dr. Homer hopes he will ride again in a fortnights time. At the recent Johannesburg Turf Club meeting the; two principal races, the Merchants Handicap and tin; Divided Farewell Handicap, were won by Sir Abe Itailey with Alan Quatermnin, a three-year-old by Camp Fire II. out of Athumia. and ITlex. a three-year-old by Cicero out of Whin-bloom. Itoth horses were ridden by E. Crickmere. The statement published last autumn that the colt Let Fly, by White Eagle out of Oondoletto, had gone to Itrazil turns out to have been incorrect. He was bought for 4,000 guineas on behalf of Dr. Pedro Beiioelit. of the Haras Chacabuco, Argentina, and it is intended that he shall take tin; place at the stud vacated by flip "death of Itridge of Canny. The German Derby has been won for the third time by the Messrs. von Weinberg. Their previous winners were Fels In l!li and Desir in the following season. This time their candidate, Aiuorino Schmidt up, beat Antivari, Adresse, and seven others starting at the long odds of about IS to 1 against. The winner is by Festina vut of Anniut, by Saraband, and his sire is by Ayrshire out of Festa dam of Fels.
