AND CHERRY MALOTTE TWO GREAT JUMPERS IN GREENTREE STABLE f- Two great steeplechasers were accountable for the major portion of the earnings of the Greentree stable Mrs. Payne Whitney in 1910. These were the seven-year-old mare Cherry Malotte and the five-year-old gelding Syosset II. The former won but twice, but they were suliicicnt, with a couple of second moneys, to establish her as the leading winner of her stable with an amount in excess of her good record the previous year. In the most profitable of these two victories she defeated Weldship, generally rated as the champion juniper of the year. This estimate, while possibly true, seems to be overlooking iu a measure the ability of Syosset II., which, although second to Cherry Malotte in winnings, defeated the latter handily enough in their only meeting in the Whitney Memorial Handicap. Starting but four times, Syosset II. was beaten only the one time that he fell. tHe did not race as a four-year-old or as a two-year-old, but as a three-year-old was a good performer on the flat, being at that time in the stable of II. P. Whitney. Gainer, whose races on the flat were the chief factors in the Greentree stables earnings of 7,5125 in 1915, had a fairly good record again this year, although winning but twice.
