NEW PARI-MUTUEL MACHINES AT JUAREZ. El Paso. Tex.. December 11. General manager Matt J. Winn, of the Jockey Club Juarez, has done away with the so-called Bowie system of wagering at the Mexican border track, and has substituted the regular pari-mutuel machiifes, the same ones that are used on the Kentucky and Canadian tracks. The machines, to the number of ten, have reached here from the Laurel track. They are divided into denominations of 0, and . There is one straight 0, three machines of and six of the variety. The sale of tickets has been abandoned in the main betting inclosure, but on the lawn and in the free field they will continue to be sold. The prices hereafter will be computed on a basis of . Dick Dwyer, the oldest starter in point of service in this country, is at present occupying the position of patrol judge at Juarez, and performing his duties quite creditably. Dick has been starting horses off and on since the year 1SS5, and previous to that time he was a rider, having commenced his career on the turf at the age of eleven. He has sent the horses away on practically every race track in the country, outside of the big New York courses. He wielded the flag at Guttefiburg, at all of the Canadian tracks in existence ten years ago, and on all of the tracks nround Chicago when racing flourished there. He has performed a feat never before accomplished by a starter, viz., sending the fields away on four different tracks in four con-secu?ive racing days. On a Friday in the year 1905, at Highland Park race track in Detroit, now the site of the Ford factory, Dwyer sent the fields away, and the following day he wielded the flag at the Woodbine track in Toronto. Jumping from this Canadian city to Chicago over Sunday, lie did the starting on Monday, the closing day at Hawthorne, and on Tuesday presided at the barrier the opening day at Harlem. He is hale and hearty, and is 11 valuable accession to the list of officials at Juarez, this being the first year he has served in an official capacity here. In the event of starter Mars Cassidy being incapacitated, Dwyer would be called upon to fill the position of starter.
