RECORD-BREAKING CROWD AT HAVANA. New Years Day Program Witnessed hy 7,500 Persons — Excellent Sport Provided. Havana. Cuba. January 1. — There was a record breaking attendance at Oriental Park this afternoon. 7.500 persons being present and over MO automobiles wen- again parked back of the grandstand. The speculation was heavy, the layers handling more than at any previous time this season. It took fifteen books to handle the heavy play, which was also good in the machines. Kacing conditions were ideal, the day being a perfect one for outdoor sport, and the truck was in excellent condition. There were two features, the Colon Handicap of 00 and the New Years Handicap, with ,000 added. I. M. Hedricks Murphy won the Colon and the Marrone Stables Golden Gate took the New Years Handicap. Runway won his third race of the meeting, when he beat Hiker a head in the seventh race. H. G. I.e dwell saddled two winners in Mr. Sniggs and Olyn G. Jockey Ambrose arrived and will ride for Senor A. I.ezama. Jockey Wirel was kicked in the side while unsaddling Colors. There are many new arrivals from the tnited States and there is much enthusiasm over the meeting. The Cubans are taking to the sport here fast. The meeting, to date, exceeds the anticipations of the management. Jockey Corey was suspended for ten days for Tossing his opponents in the fifth, and again in the sixth race, interfering with Friendless and Wooden Shoe s.
