! 1 1 t i I I f OPENING DAY AT OAKLAWN HOT SPRINGS RACING TO BEGIN TODAY WITH A FAST TRACK IN PROSPECT. Crowded Beyond Prscedent wiih People from Aaroad — Value of Purses Increased — Big Group of Layers Present. Hot Springs. Ark.. March 0.— With an unsurpassed stage setting for these parts, the racing, wiiich begins tomorrow at Oaklawn. promises to eclipse any former exhibitions of the sport here. So intense is the interest that business will be sidetracked for tin- latter half of the day and the leading in- 11 of the city, who have labored hard and faithfully to mike Hot Springs name one to be respected la the racing world, are happy in a realisation of their efforts. There is no dearth of horses and there an- plenty of them of the bettor class. Most of the stake winners at the recent Ni w Orleans meeting and many which were not able to be seen under colors there, are in readiness to take part in the coming thirty days of racing, twenty of which will be decided at Oaklawn. Some of the most prominent horsemen in the Country are on hand. Some came out of curiosity and to spend a holiday: Others are here on the Store serious business of taking an active part in the sport. Each train is adding to the visiting list, the late comers from Chicago and New York being particularly numerous. The metropolitan aggregation that came this morning occupied eleven Pullman cars. The latest arrivals lammed the already congested hostelries. Never before has this little city entertained so many visitors. The townspeople are bubbling over with joy and voicing favorable comment about racing as a magnet to attract a big visiting delegation. Necessary Finishing- Touches Completed. Nothing at the track is left undone to make the opening an auspicious one and every care has been taken for the accommodation and comfort of patrons. The few aeeeaaary finishing touches were eompleti ■! this morning and the massive but compact plant shows no traces of the big storm rlnm-age of the past summer. The restoration of the plant was accomplished at an expenditure of ¥87.000. There is nn unusual numb-r of layers on the ground and indications are that the betting feature will not suffer. There is a good prospect that forty or more price quoters will be in action en the opening day. The same system in use at tin" meeting last year will be followed. It is a modification of that wiiich was used at New Orleans and mutes operation with more dispatch. All the officials win will serve at the meeting are on hand. Constant labor by the track force will insure a fast course for the opening and. while the entries are not ijuite as extensive as expected, still no fault can be found on this score, for the program on the whole shows a good offering and a liberal sprinkling of good racers. The feature race particularly, is expected to furnish an interesting contest. The members of the Thoroughbred Horse Association, at their meeting held yesterday, enrolled many new members and a committee of fifteen wa.s appointed to discuss with Ceneral Manager Joseph K. Martin matter-: pertaining to racing at Oaklawn. After the conference Mr. Martin announced a raise of the purse offerings, to go into effect at once.
