CANADA AS THE RIVAL OF KENTUCKY. Spread of Thoroughbred Breeding Industry in Dominion Encouraged at Windsor. Detroit. Mich.. March 21. — Where will the winner of ttiis years Frontier Handicap come from — the Blue Grass valleys of Kentucky or the comparatively new breeding establishments of the Dominion of Canada V Less than five years ago the question would have created prompt laughter and the reply: "Kentucky, of course" In the present era, however. Canada has Its established breeding centers and while the country isnt so prolific of thoroughbred horses as the Blue Grass state, its produce appears destined. with developments like that of the last three years, to vie with its famous rival for every Stake race on the continent. Thornhills victory in the 1910 renewal brought the truth of this statement home better than anything else could and it awakened the biased supporter of the Kentucky bred to the reaUaatl— that the pride of the south was destined to hav position from a source other than the BagUsh broils that have been so liberally disposed of by British breeders since the Earopaaa war commenced. There was a time when a band of Canadian breds at the post drew the passing remark that they were a lot of dogs and hardly worth a bet. This opinion is altered materially in view of recent achievements on the tracks of the south as well as those of the north. It isnt a strange sight any more to see a Canadian bred heeling dirt in the eyes of a Kentucky product and the change is designed to improve, rather than diminish, both the caliber of and interest in the sport. Officials of the Windsor Jockey Club are anticipating the greatest race in the Frontier Handicaps history this year for that reason. Adding 0,000 to the subscription and starting fees was a plan designed to attract the greatest thoroughbreds in training and the eligibility scope, three-year-olds and over, will let down the bars to the foremost stars of the turf world. Entries for the rich event are piling into the jockey clubs offices, which isnt strange in view of the liberal policy pursued by the organization. If you Intend to promote racing, give your patrons the best, is the clubs slogan and. if the racing season doesnt prove to be the greatest of a long career of mko ssos .it wont be becaase the treasure box was kept locked.
