LORD DERBYS BEGINNING IN RACING Tho royal purple and scarlet excepted, there are no colors more popular on the turf than the Knowsley black and white, and it would be strange were it otherwise, for, from time immemorial, the House of Stanley has been identified with the sport of kings. This connection has never been so conspicuous as during the last quarter of a century, for it was early in the "nineties" that the late Lord Derby threw himself heart and soul Into racing, and laid the foundation of a stud which has for some time past ranked among the most famous and important in the world. He had a not less keen supporter to assist in the management of his racing affairs in his son. Lord Stanley, when the colors were revived in 1S03, and It was ho who purchased for 1,800 guineas a yearling filly by Tristan Pilgrimage, afterwards known ns Canterbury Pilgrim. Although but a moderate performer as a two-year-old, she won the Oaks easily enough, and has since earned greater renown as a broodmare Us the dam of Chaucer and Swynford! London Sportsman.
