. EMU HERZS TURF EARNINGS DURING THE YEAR I CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN IN 1916 I i Though E. Herz campaigned a numerically formidable stable during the year 1917, his turf earnings amounted to hut 4,808, an ordinary showing when compared with 8,910 won in 1910. The big decrease in earnings is due to the failure of the Herz horses to achieve any notable success in stake offerings at tracks where they were raced. Harvest King, a three-year-old by Sea King Mum, is the single representative of the stable to be included in the 1917 list of stake winners. Harvest Kings successful effort was in the Woodmere Selling Stakes at Aqueduct on September 25. when he finished first and earned ,0G0 for his owner. The son of Sea King also was a starter in the Columbus Handicap at Laurel, October 12, but succeeded only in getting third money. While Harvest King had the distinction of being the only stake winner, he had to take third place in the total amount of money won, both Daddys Choice and Manister Toi beating his record by substantial maigins. The former, a four-year-old son of Trap Rock Earth, is credited with winnings of ,800. Manister Toi won ,2G0, as against ,830 for Harvest King. Starlinch. Chieftain and Svengali, in the order named, were the next best money getters, each being above the ,000 mark. Nine other candidates accounted for the balance of the Herz earnings. Gentlewoman, a four-year-old filly by Sain Homespun; Triple Crown, a three-year-old tilly by Star Shoot Miss Kearney, and Comsora, a two-year-old tilly by The Commoner Hawksora, did not win anything for Herz during the year.
