NEW DERBY AND NEW OAKS ENTRIES Hip Substitutes for English Classics Awarded Best Patronage of Recent Years YearsThe The English Racing Calendar of December 13 contained tile entry lists of the New Derby New Oaks New Coventry Stakes and other important stake races to be run in 1918 The Xew Derby and Xew Oaks are alike in that each is a sweepstakes of 500 each half forfeit witli 5000 added to the Derby and 2500 to the Oaks The Derby was awarded fiftyfive nominations and the Oaks forty one In the case of each this is a big increase over the corresponding entry lists of 1916 and 1917 The result will be a generous increase in values awaiting the winners of the events in 1918 Among the Derby entries are King Georges promising colt Parsifal and such stars of the two yearold racinc of 1917 as Blink Gainsborough isomme Kiss Aiolinist Pandion Polyscope King John Roideur Scatwell My Dear Benevente and Zinovia while the names of My Dear Benevente AVilton Herself Georgia Frcesia Zinovia Lady Symline Damask and Thyme all fillies of proved excellence are conspicuous in the Oaks nomina ¬ tions tionsThe The New Coventry Stakes of 100 each with 2500 added for twoyearolds received the sat ¬ isfactory patronage of 104 nominations with King Georges Persopolis by Bayardo and The Tetrarch Sweet Aernal colt heading the list This race is the war time substitute for the Coventry Stakes at Ascot The name of Gay Crusader appears at the head of the list of nominations to the June Stakes token that this great colt is to adorn the racing of 191S 191SIt It is noticeable that in all these events horses which last year would have been entered in the name of Mr Fairie are now entered in his proper name A AA Cox he having formally aban ¬ doned the assumed name which has so long been associated with the highest measure of success in English racing
