M HENDERSON SETS GOOD EXAMPLE Will Contribute Ten Per Cent of This Years Stable Winnings to Red Cross Fund Louisville Ky January 7 Miller Henderson the Louisville turfman who has an extensive stable of horses in training at Hot Springs has started the ball rolling in the right direction when he tele ¬ graphed Charles F Grainger president of the New Louisville Jockey Club and a member of the Ken ¬ tucky Racing Commission that he would contribute ten per cent of the winnings of his stable during IMS to the Red Cross This shows the right spirit and Hendersons liberality probably will be followed by otlirr turfmen Of course it is going to be a big task for Kentucky turfmen to raise the Ml000 pledged for the Red Cross fund but the steam is behind thu promise and the persons that stand for racing in Kentucky will make good goodCapt Capt J Edward Madden Jr stationed at Camp Xaehary Taylor and his brother Joseph M Madden have acquired a onethird interest each in the thor ¬ oughbred horses owned by their father John E Madden owner of Hamburg Place Lexington The partnership has been registered with the Jockey Club troopOwner Capt Madden is with the headquarters troop Owner Jefferson Livingston and trainer Mose Goldblall believe that their English colt lIV will prove a formidable oaiididaUs for tin 11I1S Kentucky Derby He is a large and growthly threeyearold and likemost of the Britishers his coming to hand was somewhat retarded and he did not race suc ¬ cessfully as a twoyearold Day is bred for both speed and endurance and was regarded as one of the best yearlings purchased abroad by Cliinn for Livingston in lli Day is now wintering at Doug ¬ las Park where owner Livingston also has Spear lone American and Aurum all prospective Derby eligible eligibleOwing Owing to the extremely bad weather which has existed in Louisville during the past several weeks owners and trainers of horses at Douglas Park and Churchill Downs have not attempted anything in the way of trials of their charges All are hoping that i break in the weather will come shortly so that tliey will be able to resume sending the horses over the courses which has been utterly impossible through tin snow niul slush All horses are reported to be in good condition and holding up well wellSeveral Several owners of small strings who had contem ¬ plated taking in the Fair Grounds meeting at New Orleans have abandoned that idea and instead will probably ship to Hot Springs for tin meeting which begins tinre in February Several will take horses there mirely to condition them for racing in Ken ¬ tucky in lie sining This was done last year and many profited from the venture
