respect to numbers and the representative character of those present and there is no doubt that the day and its attendant incidents made many new friends for racing among the influ ¬ ential people of Cuba Grandstand lawns paddock betting ring and clubhouse were congested all after ¬ noon Enthusiasm ran rampant and everybody en ¬ tered into the pleasures of the day with the zest that accompanies the helping of such a worthy cause as that which was responsible for the enormous gath ¬ ering This spirit seemed to animate the entire as ¬ semblage from President Menocal who with Mrs Menocal held levee in the presidential box down to the humblest citizen Virtually all the members of President Menocals cabinet other high dignitaries of the Cuban republic the diplomatic representatives of foreign nations accredited here headed by United States Minister William K Gonzales and the lead ¬ ers of finance and society were among the two hun ¬ dred box holders holdersSIMILAR SIMILAR PROGRAM AT FUTURE DATE DATEThe The sporting features of the day were thoroughly in keeping with the brilliancy of the affair in other ways and it was a well satisfied throng that wended its way homeward as darkness fell after four hours of solid enjoyment In fact the program made such a hit that one along similar lines will be arranged to be run off in the near future futureFred Fred Schelke who brought half a dozen horses here last fall will return to the United States this week to enter the employ of Cant P M Walker as trainer Schelke formerly trained for Captain Walker with remarkable success He will take up a dozen horses belonging to Captain Walker upon his arrival at Washington in a few days He will take Hlack Frost Tom Elward Eddie Henry and Dal Acton back with him leaving Prohibition and Kindle here to race in charge of J Haitlicock HaitlicockJockeys Jockeys Petz and Wessler have returned to the United States Wessler was ordered to report M his contract employer Xnsli Turner while Ietz upon being suspended for fifteen days for rough riding decided to go back and report to W II Kar rick for whom he expects to ride this season seasonTodays Todays sport at Oriental Park produced nothing out of the ordinary The winners in most cases had substantial margins at the finish and the racing lacked the dasli and snap that characterized the sport during the earlier part of the week weekBEST BEST FINISH OF THE DAY DAYThe The fourth race proved the exception in this re ¬ spect as it was keenly contested from start to finish and at the end the proverbial blanket would have covered the first three horses Not until tlw official placing was announced were the spectators able to tell who had won Until Strickland was awarded first place with Curlicue second and James G third only a head and a nose behind the first two twoThe The first two races of the afternoon went to horses carrying the colors of Kay Spance High Gear won the opening dash in a canter while Shoddy accounted for the second race but his vic ¬ tory was not easily achieved as was that of High ear Lnnsford had to ride Shoddy out at the end to withstand the fast closing rush of London Girl GirlEddie Eddie Henry which was making his first start at the meeting in the third race was made the medium of a heavy plunge He might have won had he not ran away a halfmile on the way to the post He showed much speed in leading his opponents for a halfmile before tiring Fomtionnaire easily dis ¬ posed of him in the homestretch and drew away into six lengths lead at the end endRadiant Radiant Flower led all the way to score an easy victory in the fifth while old Grasmere failed his admirers in the closing race the winner turning up in Flare FlareLunsford Lunsford had the mount on the first two winners of the
