ESCOBA WILL BE FIT AND READY K D Alexanders Colt Training in Highly Satis ¬ factory Manner for Kentucky Derby Louisville Ky March 0 You cin say for me that Escoba will be thoroughly fit sind ready when he starts in the Kentucky Derby This was the declaration of John S AVard trainer of Kenneth 1 Alexanders crack colt and regarded as one of the best conditioners of horses in this country as the colt was being led off the Douglas Park track after a stiff gallop at threeeighths of a mile And those who watched the esisy manner in which the son of Broomstick and Christmas Star per ¬ formed his task were ready to back up the train ¬ er sr statement statementMr Mr AVsml has trained some highclass horses in his day including McChesney Dodge and Franklin but he doesnt believe any of them have impressed him so favorably as Kscoba has hasI I never had a horse doing better than Escobn is doing declared Mr AAard Kut having been in charge of him for only two months I dont really know how good a horse he Is suid I wont know until Isiter on when I start to give him some real hard tests A lot of things can happen between now and Derby Day but barring accidents Escoba will surely stsirt in the Derby and I believe he will win winBoniface Boniface the Transvaal Cerina colt that Mr Wsird has entered in the Derby in his own interest is not doing so well as his owner might wish The colt lost considerable flesh during a recent sittack of distemper from which he has now about re ¬ covered He hasnt grown sind broadened out like Escoba but even at that he is si fine looking colt The colt is able to gallop and it is possible he may be ready to start in the Derby His preparation however will not be rushed and owner Ward will not attempt anything that might tend to bring about a breakdown Mr AAard who was recently placed in charge of J AV Psirrishs Midwsiy is expecting great things from the fouryearold son of Ballot sind Thirty Third this yesir The horse has grown wonderfully since last year sind is in splendid condition He has been entered in all of the Imndicaps for msi tnred horses sind should duplicate his good record of last vesir if he continues to train on sis he is doing right now AVhile Midway didnt score in a great msiny rstces hist year he finished in the money on many occasions He was beaten a scant nose by Cudgel in the Douglas Psirk Inaugural finished third in the Kentucky sind Lsitonia Derbys sind third in the Inaugural Handicap sit Lsitonia
