April 30. — Local horsemen are eagerly awaiting the arrival at Chun hill Downs of A. K. Macomliers Kentucky Derby candidate. War Cloud, which is due to reach here from Belmont Iark tomorrow. This curiosity to see the son of Polynielus is intensified by the excellent rejiorts that have h**a received from Belmont Park concerning the inlts training for the rich event. War Cloud, however, is no stranger to Churchill Downs, for it was at that track whore he was broken shortly after his arrival from Kngland. and it was there where he received his first instructions iu racing. Bill Walker, at present in charge of the stable of A. L. Rogers, is the man to wiiose can he was intrusted after arriving on these shores Trainer Walter Jennings, according to the latest word received from him. will bring only one other horse with War loud, this one to aci as a companion to the colt. Jockey John Loftus. who rode t;eorge Smith to victory in the Dihy two years ago and who will tide War Cloud in his Oerby engagement, will arrive here witli trainer Jennings. The Derby stock of George J. Lings Freecutter received a big impetus after the colts splendid work at Churchill Downs yesterday morning, when he went a mile and an eighth in 1:.13, running the first mile iu 1:40 flat. This is by far the ha* showing made recently by any of the I erby eligibles and encourages owner Lmg to believe tiiat the son of Free Lane: can go the Derby route and comiietc successfully with the best of the aspirants 1 for the prize. The colts next work will be over the Derby route of a mil- and a quarter, in which 1 he will Ik- sent along at a good pace. Trainer r John Ward is praying f»r fair weather to continue so that he may be enabled to push tiie colts preparation without any further letup. Sewell Combs, tin- Jack Atkm colt that A. B. Gallaher is training for the Derby, is also working ; creditably at Lexington. His most recent work on , a drying-out track was a mile in 1:1-1, which is . not half bad.
