REFUSES HUGE SUM FOR GAY CRUSADER CRUSADERI I have been told that an offer of 500000 has Ixen made on behalf of an American speculator for Gay Crusader and declined by A AV Cox but cannot vouch for the statcnmnt being true That owner was many times tempted with huge offers for Bayardo and it may well be that his pride in the son Is great enough to ignore money where liis triplecrowned hero is concerned though I imagine this would constitute a record offer the siearest approach to it in my knowledge having been when J P Joel refused 400000 for Sunstar to go to Itussia As might reasonably IK expected if a son of Hayardo Gay Laum the Crusader is a really good horse worthy of ranking with the best classic winners of the past and it is much to be regretted that he has fallen a victim to tlie exi ¬ gencies of training for there is little doubt that lie would have set the seal on his fame by winning the Newmarket Gold Cup and already he has secured many subscribers as a stallion There is no reason whatever why he should not make as great success is his dead sire which Ingot among other good horses GainslMirough winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Mr Cox has been a most succes ful breeder and I hear that he has a promising t vo yearold brother to Gay Crusader ill Manilardo Vigilant In London Simrtsman
