HOT FAVORITES DEFEATED Hollister and Nigel Conspicuous ConspicuousAmong Among the Saratoga Failures Panaman Runs a Remarkably Bad Race for Him Sun King Breaks Down in the Steeplechase By 7 L Dempsey DempseySaratoga Saratoga N Y August 19 Bed Cross day was an immense success here this afternoon and that worthy cause will be benefited handsomely as a result of the good attendance that came to view the siwirt Contributing factors were the fine a fairly good program and the fast track trackIncidents Incidents during the afternoon were many most of them costly to the backers as it involved the defeat of five of the favorites the downfall of Hol ¬ lister Panaman Nigel and Sun King being attended particularly with big profits to the oralizers The afternoons racing culminated with a demonstra ¬ tion against the placing judges because of their award of first place to War Kiss over Minuet The latter was staunchly backed and displaced Shady as favorite She was caught in a jam but moved up with a terrific rush when straightened away for the stretch racing and seemingly got up to win In the last strides to achieve a well earned victory but the winnerThe judges posted War Kiss number as the winner The Mohawk Stakes for threeyearolds under selling conditions and worth 1950 to the winner was the best offering from a monetary point but the1 Bed Cross mile handicap which displaced the orig ¬ inal threequarters handicap was held in more es ¬ teem by virtue of the better class ones named to start in it Both races developed upsets and H61 lister and Panaman the respective staunchly backed favorites were taken into camp Buxtou was chlefly at fault for Hollisters defeat for he rode him In bungling style taking him all over the track and was absolutely helpless when it came to extracting the Macomber representative out of the difficulty he had forced him into by his bad guidance in the early running Slippery Elm which had benefited extensively by escaping the frequent mixups in the early racing and showing the most speed through ¬ out won somewhat easily Hollister landing second place from Bondage BondageThe The Mohawk Stakes was first run in 1901 and its history for considerable censure in the stake race He attempted to keep pace with the nonstaying Sweep Up II during the early part of the race with the result that when the stretch was reached Pamimans reserve speed had been wasted and he finished with the also rans AVyoming winning easily from Klmendorf with Japhet coming with a belated rush overhauling the others for third place Lyke placeLyke again showed an amateurish effort in his riding of Nigel another heavily backed one run ¬ ning in the B F Carman silks in the fifth raci The owner was particularly wroth over the ri tf effort on his representative and did not mince his words wordsBegardless Begardless of who was to blame rider or horse the fact was patent that Nigel ran far below a former contest in which he finished second in u mile race run nearly a second and a half faster The purse went to Dan which also showed an acro ¬ batic performance over some preceding starts He won from Deckmate with Pleasant Dreams landing third thirdSUN SUN KING BREAKS DOWN DOWNSun Sun King because of a preceding good race was regarded as best in the steeplechase but he had difficulty in landing in third place and his perform ¬ ance this afternoon probably marks his final one under silks for he broke down in the race In ¬ fidel II was an easy winner with Eagle Thistle in second place First Out the only other starter in the race catapulted his rider out of the saddle at the last hedge when he had u good winning chance chanceThe The favorite backers began auspiciously when Lion dOr galloped home in front after leading all the way with Kiss Again in second place and Lads Love third thirdThe The Bed Cross War Fund will l enefit to the extent of 414140 from todays gate receipts It will also receive 10400 from the Bed Cross
