ROAMER VANQUISHES TIME Swift Racer Easily Eclipses Sal ¬ vators Long Standing Record Motor Cop Outfinishes The Porter Porterand and Tippity Witchet in Saranac SaranacHandicap Handicap Track Gossip By J L Dempsey DempseySaratoga Saratoga N Y August Il In addition to his well merited title of Peerless Koamer Andrew Mil ¬ lers iNiptilar gelding this afternoon gained the right to be known as champion miier of America when he succeeded in his effort against Salvators 135 mile record and xet the new mark at 134 1 This was the official time displayed but in the judg ¬ ment of a inimlxT of experienced watch handlers Koamer nin fully twofifths of a second faster The performance was a wonderful one and in tin opinion equaledNot of critics may never again be equaled Not alone was Koamers effort a superior one from a time standpoint over that of Salvators made at Monmuiith Park N J August 28 1890 for on that occasion the Haggin star had two pace ¬ makers to bring out his best speed and they kept him attended throughout and near the end Marty ISergeii drove him hard and even used his whip whipRoamer Roamer this afternoon ran minus pacemaker and was kept under mild restraint for most of the way Sehuttinger using admirable judgment and keeping Roamer to an almost level pace for the entire way with Roamer buckling to his task in ad ¬ mirable style and doing his best near the end with ¬ out extra urging from his rider TUO fractionaltlmea recorded1y official timer Jack Odom follows 12 23 34 4G 58 110 ffThe 122 134 ff The twoyearold Lightning with an exercise boy up with silks on accompanied Koamer to the start ¬ ing post ostensibly to induce Koamer into belief that he was indulging in a race but after the first few strides after the running start that they were dispatched by Lightning was taken out of the way and Koamer went about his task alone It was apparent to the watch holders that at the pace Koamer was traveling he would accomplish his task and as he showed no signs of diminishing his fric tionless stride in the stretch the turfmen began cheering the horse long lieforc he reached the finish After the display of the time and on Koamers return to the scales the amdause for the great gelding was tumultuous each trying to outdo his neighbor in according homage to the fleetfooted and game racer There have been many trials against Salvatorls time since the big chestnut son of Prince Charlie Salina established his figures The first essay was tiiat of his famous rival Tenny the swayback son of Kayon dOr Belle of Maywood He attempted a mile record performance at Urighton Ueaeh in 1891 but the Pulsifer representative was in a sulky mood on that occasion and his time of l4 Vf was nothing to brag about in view of the fact that Bill Dalys plater Uallston had run the first nice on that day in the same time as that of Tenny TennyThe The last trial against time was by Jefferson Livingstons Iron Mask which essayed the task at Juarez ignominiouslyThere Mex but failed ignominiously There is only one record lower than that of Koamers and it is held by Caimen over a straight ¬ away course in England Caimen was timed in 133 f Another nicer to achieve fame for a fast mile is the W K Vanderhilt owned Setatlket which ran a mile Avith Fnink ONeill in tlie saddle in a nice at one of the tracks in Snain in l35f This performance was in competition and was ac ¬ complished only recently according to advices re ¬ ceived today by Fred Burlew from Frank ONeill ONeillRECALLING RECALLING TEN BHOECKS RACE RACEIn In connection with mile time races it is worthy to record Walkers statement That oldtime rider and now trainer of John K Maddens horses said that when he rode Ten Broeek in his mile race of 1394 that performance was held to be a marvel ¬ ous one and he intimated that but for the fact of exhausting Ten Broecks reserve speed in the third quarter he would have run faster The fractional time of Ten Proeck for comparison with Koamers is interesting and is as follows 25 50 1134 139 91 The fractional time of Salvators great performance is as follows 23 41 111 135 135Mr Mr Miller was surrounded by an admiring throng when he began forcing his way to the judges stand to greet his champion I am mighty proud to be the owner of as true a horse as Koamer said he to a group of intimates I think that Sehut ¬ tinger deserves a lot of praise for rating him so well without pacemakers and of course our hats are all off to trainer Jack Goldsborough who trained him himMatthew Matthew Hyrne who trained Salvator for all his engagements including his race against the mile time congratulated Mr Miller heartily on learners performance You have a great horse said Mr Byrne and I hope the time he made this after ¬ noon stands as a record as long as Salvators stood stoodWillis Willis Sharpe Kilmer owner of Sun Uriar im ¬ mediately after Koamer had established the new mark set about arrangements to have Sun Uriar make an attempt to lower Koamers newly estab ¬ lished figures and he signified his intention of al ¬ lowing his horse to make the attempt next Sat ¬ urday urdayAn An immense throng was attracted by Reamers race and conditions for the trial were propitious barring a moderate wind that probably retarded Koamer slightly in the stretch but not enough to have materially differed the running Whatever individual betting was indulged in on the nice was at evens that Koamer would succeed in his under ¬ taking There were no considerable sums that changed hands on the result resultWhile While the time race was the headliner the Sara ¬ nac Handicap at one mile contested by an ex ¬ ceptional band of good threeyearolds held vast interest for the throng The victor went to A K Macombers Motor Cop which triumphed over Edward U McLeans The Porter making his first start since his victorious Kentucky campaign Tip pity Witchet landed in third place The Porters performance was a gem and his defeat was due solely to the outside post position he drew and also to the fact that he had to lose ground on the stretch turn by a wide sweep to secure a clear course Considering that it was the McLean colts first start in over six weeks his showing is the more noteworthy and close observers are now not so prone to accord the threevearold crown to Kim Uriar 1 Continued on second page ROAMER VANQUISHES TIME The
