CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Roamers Marvelous Record on Turf Not Even Approached Feat of Breaking Salvators SalvatorsMile Mile Record Will Never NeverBe Be Forgotten By T K Jeffry JeffrySiiratoga Siiratoga X Y August 5 Roamors foit in running the fastest mile oil record in America at the mature age of seven years will forever stand out in the annals of American racing oven sliould tlic crown which ho now wears is a king of American thoroughbreds be wrested from him at some future lime To run a mile uiipaced in l3i1f over a course containing an elbow and the usual torn would stamp any horse is a champion To ac tiiinplish such a feat at such an advanced age as seven years after severe campaigning season after season under high imposts against the best horses of tins unusually long period covered by Uoamers Yionderful racing career elevates the remarkable son of Knight Errant Rose Tree II into a class all by himself in the whole history of the American turf Nobody can recall anything to even approach the marvelous record which Hoamer has made Horses come and horses go but itoamer seems to have tin faculty of going on forever foreverThe The opinion is general among those who timed Wednesdays race against time unofficially that the official timer of the Jockey Club was most con ¬ servative in the figures which were hung out to stand as the official time for the nice Many highly competent timers declare that Koamer ran at least twofifths of a secoiuT faster than the lime which will go down in history to mark his sensational feat Some put it even a s low as lUVi Hut this was the extreme and not nearly so representative as the 131 which many a watch in skilful hands showed when Roamer flashed past the judges Analysis of the fractional time figures furnished by the official timer shows that the fastest eighth of the trial was the third which was run in 11 seconds and that the final eighth was run in 12 seconds As might have been ex ¬ pected this was the slowest eighth of all but it still was a marvelously fast one considering the vojidcrful pace at which Itoamer liad been running from the start The official time for each eighth is here shown in the order of running 12J 11 11 11 12 12 12 12 12How How much faster Itoamer could have run over a straightaway course as Salvator ilid when he es ¬ tablished the American record of 13511 at Mon moiith 1ark X J which stood the test of twenty eight years of racing is purely a matter of con ¬ jecture It is reasonable to l elievo however that it would have made an appreciable difference had Itoamer not had to make the turns which he did in running over the elliptical course The absence of a pacemaker made no difference at all to Kuiiner He invariably works generously and as fast without comnany as though n pacemaker were employed Must horses will do better for having a pacemaker but Koamer is not one of this type and this circumstance is looked upon as another evidence of his wonderful versatility versatilityWILL WILL WOT HAVE ADVERSE EFFECT EFFECTIt It will be interesting to observe iiow the running of such a phenomenally fast raie will affect Itoamer when he goes to the post to fill his re ¬ maining engagements here which consist of tho Merchants and Citizens Handicap to be rui to ¬ morrow over the mile and threesixteenths course and the Saratoga CUD to be run on Jie closing day of the meeting Saturday of next week over the mile and threequarters course As good a judge as Jack Goldsborough under whose expert training Ituamer has won all his laurels in the years that he has been carrying the colors of Andrew Miller so illustriously does not believe that his sensational feat will have any adverse effect uyou the doughty lit ili champion championThere There are not many who incline to the belief that Willis Sharps Kilmers crack threeyearold Sun Briar will be able to better Itoimers record if he makes an attempt Jo do so It is conceded that Sim Briar is a highclass threeyearold but it does look as if It would be asking too much of him to do what an exceptional horse like Itoamer has been able to accomplish The weight factor would be an important item in connection with an attempt upon tins record by Suu Jriar It probably would not be easy to find a jockey who would do justice to this handsome Frenchman at the light weight which his age would entitle him to carry If Mr Kilmer should conclude to waive the weight consideration and ride Knapp the regular stable jockey who has guided the colt so effectively this year and last it would be i meritorious feat indeed should Sun Briar come out of the race with firing colors The fact that so competent a judge as Henry McDaniel the accomplished trainer of the Kilmer stable is willing that his charge should make the attempt should not be lost sight of however Mr McDaniel is not the type of a man who is accustomed to chase rahibows with the ex ¬ pectation of finding the proverbial pot of gold
