RETIREMENT FOR ONE YEAR ONLY John Saaford Explains Why He Intends to Dispose of His Racing Stable New York September 5 The announcement that John Sanford had decided to retire from racing was a big surprise to all interested in the siwrt When questioned on the subject Mr Sanford said saidIt It is a retirement for but a year Just a year from next spring I will be back on the turf with a string of horses of my own breeding The horses I am selling are the ones that have been racing tliis year and the ones I had expected to race next year yearI I will sell none of my mares or stallions Over in France I have mares and also in England I have others while in this country I have the best thor ¬ oughbred blood I could procure down in Kentucky and up at Hurricana Farm at Amsterdam AmsterdamBut But just why are you selling your racing stable Mr Sanford was askefl Every one will be wondering whether yon are tired of the sport or whether you have some fear it will not prosper was suggested suggestedCertainly Certainly I have not tired of the sport and still more certainly I am not afraid for the future of racing was the reply I am in more or less of a position to know the feelings and conditions of the public and I know that racing is popular and will continue to grow As a business man I might seem foolish to offer to sell my horses which might go at a sacrifice if there was any doubt of the growing popularity of racing Good horses are in demand If I thought for a moment that good thoroughbreds might be a drug on the market I would not want to sell I could afford to keep them and wait for a better market and certainly would not want to see any of my friends stuck with property that I might think would prove un ¬ profitable for them or myself The crowds which have been attending the races all through this and last year are enough proof of popularity of the sport sportBUSINESS BUSINESS INTERESTS THE CAUSE CAUSEAs As a matter of fact my business interests cause me temporarily to retire from racing The manage ¬ ment of my business requires all my attention Be ¬ cause I will not be able to give racing next year all the time it requires I will IMS out of it itThere There is a new Liberty Loan coming on and I not only want to subscribe all that is expected of me but to go further and do more in the way of helping from a financial and industrial standpoint There was a meeting of the board of directors of our company at Amsterdam recently and this was the unanimous conclusion If the government wants our factories they can have them without a word of protest or hackling over terms termsfp fp at Amsterdam the citizenry of the town where the Sanford mills have been an institution for s many years will be sad at he thought of no Sanfurd horses running on the turf turfMr Mr Sanford considers it almost as important to maintain the breed of horses as any other essential industry and to this end he will keep on with his breeding establishment iu France where lie Las twentynine thoroughbred marcs as well as in England where he has a dozen niares at the Meddler Stud near Newmarket down in Kentucky where he has as many more and up at Hurricana Farm near Amsterdam where there are still more moreAnil Anil in closing out his big collection of good horses Mr Sanford is not forgetting the govern ¬ ments need of breeding material materialIt It just occurred to me he said that I had listed Meteorite to be sold I will order him taken off the sale list and will present him to the govern ¬ ment Major Strawbridge who has been select ¬ ing sires for Uncle Sam suggested that Meteorite was needed some time ago agoYoung Young Stephen Sanford the only son of the master of Hurricana is a freshman at Yale and some time before the new draft law was passed he enrolled with the Yale contingent for training in the army service It is his fathers hope that some day this son may own and maintain Hurricaua Farm just as it has descended from his grand ¬ father
