IMPROVING SITUATION IN FRANCE The great successes of the allied forces in France have had an immediate and beneficial effect on the horse breeding industry in France Last Wednes ¬ days issue of Le Jockey contains the welcome information that in view of the improvement in the situation the minister of agriculture M Boret in reply to a letter from the Vicomte dHarcourt on behalf of the Societe dEncouragement and after consultation with the military governor of Paris lias agreed to allow ten days racing at MaisonsLaffitte from October 15 to November 14 The racing is to be of the test order similar in all respects to that of 1917 A total of nearly 60000 will be dis ¬ tributed over the ten days on each of which a program of six races will be run throngh Of this sum of 40000 is to be given by the Societe dEn conragement and the remainder by the Societe Sport ¬ ive dEncouragement The Steeplechase Society like ¬ wise will soon inaugurate its series of test meetings which are to commence on October 3 and end iii the early days of December the prizes to be run for Iteing of the total value roughly of 50000 The Steeplechase Society and the Societe dEn ¬ couragement are each likewise giving about 2300 toward the various test races which are tobe run at Bordeaux London Sportsmaiu
