SPLASH HEARD AROUND THE WORLD They are sliding down the ways Prom Maine to Florida from the great lakes to the gulf the vessels of this great new merchant marine are daily making the splash that is heard around the world During the month of July 123 ships were launched breaking all world records More ships were launched within the last sixty days than were built in any one year previous to the present United States Shipping Board of which Edward N Hurley is chairman The total deadweight tonnage of ves ¬ sels launched during July was 031644 tons Since August 1917 when the shipping board began opera ¬ tions there have been completed and delivered thirtyseven steel contract ships with a deadweight tonnage of 245700 and 210 requisitioned steel ships of 1571850 tons Almost half of this tonnage was delivered ia the last three months 775545 to be exact
