G M HENDRIES PRETENTIOUS STABLE Now at Douglas Park Awaiting Opening of Meeting Next Monday Rancher in Fine Fettle Louisville Ky September 17 Already then are some fifty horses at Douglas Park in anticipa ¬ tion of next Mondays opening Included among these is the important stable of George M Hendrie president of the Windsor Jockey Club one of the leading Canadian racing organizations The star of the Ilendrie string is the sixyearold horse Rancher which has been racing with marked distinction for several years in the United States and Canada in competition with the best horses in training year after year It is doubtful if Rancher ever raced in better form than he has been showing this year He will carry the Hendrie colors in all of the im ¬ portant events to be run here and at Latonia in ¬ cluding the two cup contests for which the Douglas Park and Latonia meetings will be notable It is a sure thing that he will be one of the top weights and favorites for the Louisville Cup race of two miles with which the Douglas Park meeting will be brought to a close closeThe The Hendrie horses have recently returned to Douglas Park from Nashville where they spent the interim following the cjose of summer racing at Latonia Rancher and his stablumates are reported to be in especially good condition for fall cam ¬ paigning and are counted upon to give a good ac ¬ count of themselves here and at Latonia Besides the cup race Rancher is a leading candidate for honors in the Douglas Park Inaugural Handicap of 2000 added which will be the big attraction for the opening of the local racing season on Monday next John Walters who trains the Hendrie horses with such good results is hoping that fast track conditions will prevail on the opening day for Rancher has a notorious dislike for soft footing and he probably will be an absentee if the track is anything but fast fastNumerous Numerous reservations have also been made at Churchill Downs for horses that will not only take part in the meeting at that track which will im ¬ mediately follow the Douglas Park meeting but which will first be seen in action at Douglas Park The tremendous stabling capacity of these two tracks in such close proximity to each other is not the least important factor in the popularity and im ¬ portance of Louisville as a thoroughbred racing center
