ONE WAY TO RESTORE PEACE The independence of no nation is safe the liberty of no individual is BUre i until the military despotism which holds the German people In the hollow of its hand has been Jnadc impotent and harmless forever Appeals toJiistice to moral obligation to honor no longer avail with sucli a power There is hilt one way to restore peace to the world and that is by overcoming1 the physical might of German imperial ¬ ism by force of arms armsJf Jf enthusiasm and ardor can make success sure thri we Americans have no cause for anxiety no reason to doubt the outcome of the conflict But enthusiasm and ardor are not all They must be founded on a profound conviction 6f the right ¬ eousness of our cause andr on implicit faith that the God of Battles will strengthen the arm of him who fijhtsr for the right In the time of stress and peril when a man stands face to face with death in its most terrible form God will not desert him who puts his trust in Him It is at such a time that the eternal verities will be disclosed It is then when men realize that existence is more than this IJfe and that over our destinies watches an all powerful and compassionate God they will stand amidst the storm of battle unflinching and un ¬ afraid i In the bond which thus today unites the democ ¬ racies of the new world with those of the old world resides thehope of mankind the only possible surety to future generations that there will be preserved inviolate those principles of justice which have guided the nations into the paths of progress and of peace If this bond of united purpose should be broken or if the democracies of the earth should fail in their struggle against the military power of Prus ¬ sia civilization would be again plunged into that state of darkness arid oppression from yliicli it took humanity centuries to emerge info the full light of liberty But this bond of union this bond of democracy will not be broken nor will the great liberty loving nations of this earth be defeated by the barbarous monster which today seeks to crush free ¬ dom and to impose upon mankind the evils of depotisrn Secretary Lansing in Humanitarian
