GREAT CROWD AT THE NEW DERBY Despite the various restrictions as to the means of reaching Newmarket there was an immense crowd at this years Derby The supply of race cards was so limited that by 11 oclock on the morning of the race they were selling in the New ¬ market streets at sixty cents each while at the racecourse their price advanced to 125 then to 250 and by the time racing started as much as 500 eacli was paid for them It was a day on which a card was badly needed too the starters for the eight races totaling 179 The largest field was I thirtyone for a twoyearold race and The Panther by Tracery which was favorite at 11 to 10 on fairly walked in
