CHURCHILL DOWNS FALL RACE MEETING Beautiful Home of New Louisville Jockey Club Eeady for FortyFourth Season of Sport SportLouisville Louisville Ky September 20 Beautiful Churchill Downs resplendent in its autumnal garb is all ready for the fortyfourth annual season of fall racing which will own Monday September 30 and continue for a period of six days closing Saturday October 5 The meeting will follow closely the one at Douglas Park and will practically be a continuation of that meeting which closes Saturday September 28 The same highclass horses seen in action at Douglas Park will be transferred to Churchill Downs while the same riders will be seen in the saddle The list of officials will be identical wills the exception that Charles F Grainger will be in the judges stand at the Downs instead of Judge T J Clay ClayEver Ever since the foundation of the Louisville Jockey Jockey Club in the year 1876 spring and fall meetings have been held at Churchill Downs with ¬ out any cessation and this year will be no inter ¬ ruption to what has come to be regarded by the citizens of Louisville and Kentucky as one of the states chief outdoor amusement enterprises The clubs officials have wisely determined upon this course in spite of the opposition from certain quarter that has sought to ston racing in Kentucky The meeting this year has been curtailed only out day as compared with last year when the season lasted seven days daysFour Four important stakes are to be decided during the meeting the chief fixture being the St Leger Stakes which will have its twentyfourth running when it is decided on the closing day Longdis ¬ tance races have always been popular with Ken ¬ tucky racegoers and it is not surprising that the St Leger is easily the biggest drawing car1 of tin meeting The club adds 2000 to the stakes the race being for threeyearolds and over and the distance two miles Among former winners of the stake are numbered many sterling performers which have added luster to their names by further vic ¬ tories on the turf and success iu the stud Last years renewal was won by A B Hancocks great race mare Embroidery which raced the two miles and a quarter over a slow track in 401J This noted niare is now a matron at Mr Hancocks breeding farm t tSTAKE STAKE FIXTIJBES TO BE DECIDE The Golden Rod stakes the Falls City Handicap and the Cherokee Stakes are the other features to be decided during the meeting Tho Falls City is a comparatively new fixture having been in ¬ stituted eisht years ago It is for threeyearolds and over and at threequarters of a mile It has an added money value of 2000 Last years re ¬ newal was captured by Gallaher Bros Vogue with Rradleys Choice second and Pan Zareta third Tills stake will be the feature of the opening days card cardThe The Golden Rod Stakes most appropriately named is the sole stake of the autumn meeting for twoyearolds It has 1000 added money and has attracted i fine list of entries including the pick of the juveniles of the west Last years renewal went to J J Troxlers Fern Handley which is still in active training trainingThe The Cherokee Stakes completes the list of stake fixtures This is also a relatively new fixture having had its inaugural eight years ago It is for the older divisions of horses and is over the coarse of a mile and a sixteenth It was won last year by Jefferson Livingstons Warsaw Mr Liv ¬ ingston is going to attempt another victory in this stake he having several of his best performers named in the event eventSecretary Secretary J It Campbell has issued the program book for the meeting and the publication of the conditions of the several races meets with the approval of horsemen The purses are more liberal than at any former fall season most of them being valued at 1000 The liberality of the club has served to attract the better grade of horses and patrons are assured of the best possible grade of sport sportGeneral General Manager Matt J Winn will not be n hand for the meeting but in his absence the affairs of the meeting will be looked after by Charles F Cmiuger president of the club and H C Apple gate its popular secretarytreasurer secretarytreasurerThe The Red Cross will as usual profit by the meet ¬ ing the same as at Lexington aid Douglas Park Ten per cent will be deducted from all purses and applied to the amount pledged to the Red Cross Employes will also contribute their share while the club will donate ten per cent of its gross earnings
