DOUGLAS PARK MEETING ENDS TODAY Louisville Cup at Two Miles Feature of Closing Day Program of Unusual Brilliance Louisville Kv September 27 The Douglas Par autumn meeting will come to an end with the running nf a splendid closing day program of which the Louis ¬ ville Cup at twi miles is the principal feature ThiJ is the first of the long distance events run each fall over the Kentucky tracks In recent years tin various racing associations of Kentucky have en ¬ couraged ind fostered long distance nicing bv giv ¬ ing substantial purses for such events The only discordant note in this arrangement Is that the horsemen have not fully roox ratcil with the rac ¬ ing associations with the result that the fields for these races have been invariably small Tomorrows race is no exception in this resect only three being named to start J O G H Keenes Moscowa O A Bianchis Lucky B and Williams Bros Kl Key KeyIt It is recognized that racing of this sort not only is pleasing to the public but that it tests the stamina of the thoroughbred as no other type of racing does and so accomplishes with a finality be ¬ yond dispute the real purpose of the racing tests that have become so popular the improvement of the breed of liorses by the selection of the most desirable for lreeding purposes through the in ¬ exorable test of tlie finishing post To win a race like the Louisville Cup stamps a horse as far nlwve the ordinary and enhances the value of the animal for breeding purposes to a degree in keeping with achievementIt the undt niabh importance of tlie achievement It has happened unfortunately that two of the five winners of the Louisville Cup to date have Iwen geldings physically unable to transmit their val ¬ uable qualities to offspring The two referred to ire Clubs and Hodge The latter was an especially good race horse But two other winners of this race George M Hendries high class horse Great Britain and A K Macombers Star Hawk a colt of aristocratic English breeding that achieved fame in other long distance races as well have already entered the stud with a reputation in which the winning of the Louisville Cup plays an important part And the same thing will apply with equal force to Capt A B Hancocks splendid mare Em broidery last falls winner of this notable race raceThe The long distance racing which is scheduled to take place in Kentucky this fall is invested with an ddded importance because of the value now being attached in influential quarters to such races it connection with the development of thoroughbred stallions suitable for the important work of increas ¬ ing and improving the supply of horses for army purposes Cavalry has been playing an increased part in the great world war of late and it is ipparent that this branch of the service will have to be kept up just as in the days of old
