TURNEY BROS PROMINENT TURFMEN Death of Amos Turney Hecalls Days When Their Colors Were Carried by Stars of the Turf Lexington Ky October 15 Tlie death of Amos Tnrney on his farm near Paris Ky last Sunday recalls to turfmen the firm of Turney Hros promi ¬ nent fur many years on the running turf turfFor For a period of twenty years tlie string of run ¬ ners of the Turiiey Bros were among the most suc ¬ cessful on tie American and Canadian tracks Their number comprised such good horses as Kleburne Waterbass Flabbergast Martin Doyle Theo Cook Clell Turnty Horron Tillo Jr Catlutt Elma Ir Eichberg Brilliance and many others Tillo was the winner of the Suburban Handicap at Shecps head Hay HayHorron Horron won the Toronto Cup at four years old and Waterbass another good animal also won it at three years old Elma was another big winner Dr Eichberg was sold to the late Charles Fleiseh mann of Cincinnati for 15000 15000When When two sous of Jesse Turney tlie other member of the firm of Turney Bros were ill with typhoid fever r Eichberg of Cincinnati who lost his life a few years ago in the Adirondacks by drowning was called to attend them They both recovered and as a mark of his appreciation Jesse Turnev named what was then their most promising year ¬ ling afler the doctor The horse by his future performances Droved a veritable wonder on the turf About turfAbout the only thing occurring during the years of their successes on the turf which caused them regret was their failure to buy from John Madden the famous Old Hosebud which was offered them for 7Ml is a yearling Although yearlingAlthough the firm of Turney Bros retired from tlie turf about two yoars ng and disposed if Uieir entire stable Mr Turney until the day uf Ms death MIS intensely interested in events of the racing world He was of a jovial and kind dispo ¬ sition and many a jockey and stable boy has good reason to remember him through his acts of kind ¬ ness For a period of two yoars during tlie latter part of their activities on the turf jockey Nash Tumor was under contract to the Turney Bros and was instrumental in keeping their string promi ¬ nently Iwfore the racing public Will Martin who developed and sold Suuny blope for a big price was
