GREAT CROWD AT LAUREL Thousands Welcome the Resump ¬ tion of Racing in Maryland Cudgel The Porter and Extermin ¬ ator Win Principal Features of a Wonderful Program Baltimore Mil October 26 One of the largest crowds tliat ever witnessed racing in the state of Maryland was present at Laurel Park today to welcome the resumption of the sport after a sus ¬ pension of two weeks due to the spread of influ ¬ enza which necessitated the State Board of Health placing a ban on all public gatherings jn or out ¬ doors Big delegations came from Washington Philadelphia and surrounding cities including many army and navy officers and jneu in all branches of the service The hunt clubs were also well represented Fine bracing autumnal weather with clear bright skies made the day ideal for outdoor sport and the track was lightning fast fastManager Manager Winn of the Maryland State Fair of ¬ fered a program commensurate with the occasion carding for decision five stake features and thrve overnight races of more than ordinary merit The first stake feature to be decided was the Blue and Crey Highweight Handicap of 1500 added at three quarters of a mile The winner came iroiA the stable of E B McLean when iis crack three yearold The Porter with 129 pounds up met and defeated Samuel Ross Crank after a terrific stretch duel in which the McLean racer got up in the final stride Bnlse was third but going fastest of all at the end after swerving over to the outside at the eighth post postGREAT GREAT DAT FOR McLEAN STABLE STABLEIt It was a great day for the McLean stable three of the Washington turfmans horses winning Be ¬ sides The Porter the old sprinter Leochares and Peerless One also carried the McLean colors to victory victoryThe The Dixie Handicap at one mile and a quarter re ¬ sulted in a corking nice between Cudgel and Mid ¬ way Midway set a terrific pace to the last eighth where Cudgel joined him and it was not until in the last few strides that the great Ross colt was able to draw away dinar Khayyam was not punished when he tired after ninuiic a good mile mileKxterminator Kxterminator this years Kentucky Derby win ¬ ner accounted for the Ellicott City Handicap another stake feature for threeyearolds exclusive ¬ ly The Kilmer representative led all the way anil was never seriously menaced Aurum finishing sec ¬ ond and Red Sox third thirdIxwchnres Ixwchnres victory came in the Lovetie Purse a dasli of one mile in which some fast sprinters were engaged They were not fast enough for the old fellow however and lie had easy sailing sailingThe The seventh running of the Chevy Chase Steeple ¬ chase the feature event through the field resulted in an easy victory for the Frenchbred Dramaturge from the stable of Commander J K L Ross Dramaturge fenced well and after Kingstown Pier tired from setting the pace to the last mile drew away in commanding fashion The colors of Commander Ross were again to the fore in the Waterloo Purse a dash of one mile the speedy filly Milkmaid beating Be Frank and Kontledge the only serious opposition remaining after Pen Rose was withdrawn
