ACCOUNTANT NEARLY A 100000 WINNER Champion Three Year Old of 1906 Just Failed to Get in Select list of American Winners Accountant the leading threeyearold of 1900 failed by an even 1000 to bo Included in the se ¬ lect list of American horses that won 100000 or more during llieir racing careers Accountant as stated above was the leading threeyearold of 1900 but to siy that lie was the best of that year would be detracting from the fame of Burgomaster the great Whitney racer which early in that year was easily Accountants master However Burgo ¬ master broke down and had to be retired while Accountant raced ou to fame and glory earning the right to be styled the champion of his year yearAs As a twoyearold Accountant did not rank in the first flight although a stake winner and a hardy courageous colt He started in fourteen races won two was second twice third twice and ran unplaced eight times His first start was for a purse at Sheepshead Bay June 15 for which lie ran fourth to Timlier McKittredge and Sufficiency June 28 in ran third to Yankee Counsel and Phidias at five and a half furlongs in 107 beaten a head and a nose His first success was in the Mnntauk Stakes at Brighton Beach Here with 107 pounds up In beat George C Bennett 127 Ormondale 107 and two more at threequarters in 114 This race was run July 19 and three days later he achieved the principal success of his twoyearold career when lie won the rich Brighton Junior Stakes He was at 20 to 1 in the betting but with 122 pounds up he won easily from Pegasus 107 Don Diego 125 McKittrrMge 107 Albert F 107 GREAT VICTORY IN WITHERS STAKES STAKESAccountant Accountant began his three year old career May 1 by defeating Tommy Waddell Emergency and three others at Jamaica in a threequarters dash for a purse winning by a nose He carried 120 pounds and ran the distance in 114 His next start was for the Metropolitan Handicap at Bel inont Park He got off poorly and Jrau unplaced Better things were at haiid however and starting for the Withers Stakes May 19 he led all the waj and won by a head from Bohemian after a bitterly contested drive through the stretch Clark Griffith was third six lengths away and The Quail Juggler and Belmere ran unplaced The mile was covered la 138 a grand performance with 120 pounds up and the fastest Withers ever run This perform ¬ ance at once marked Accountant a crack three yearold and greatly improved over his twoyear old form In his next race he met his master in a colt that would probably have remained unbeaten that year had he not fallen lame This was Bur ¬ gomaster and the race was for the Belmont stakes Burgomaster at once opened a big gap and strid ¬ ing along without ever being fully extended won in a muter by four lengths The Quail finishing second a head in front of Accountant because the latter tired iu tlie stretcJi and lost several lengths y a swerve The mile and threeeighths route of the race was covered iu 220 Tlie unplaced ones were Pegasus Bohemian and Cassini CassiniAccountnits Accountnits next race also brought defeat This was in the Jockey Club Weight for Age Ituce run at Belmont Park Whimsical took the lead at the start and was never headed in a remarkably fast run race She traversed the first mile iu 139 and finished out the mile and an eighth in 151 winning tiy a length and a half from Accountant The latter ran second throughout and finished a length in front of The Picket Water Light was the mily other starter The result was anticipated Whimsical being a 9 fo 10 favorite at post time and Accountant was not disgraced His next race was for an overnight handicap at Graveseud June S distance a mile and a sixteenth Carrying 113 pounds he won by a head from Logistilla 105 in l4li Tradition 123 was third and Confederate Garnish Samson Coy Maid Larabie and Phil Finch ran unplaced At the same track June 13 he took up 121 pounds and defeated Garnish t8 Maxnar 105 and seven others in a similar race at the was reported at the time that Mr Brady paid 40000 for Accountant AccountantSOLD SOLD TO JAMES BRADY FOR 40000 40000This This was at Sheepshead Bay in tlie Tidal Stakes at a mile and a quarter He was u 7 to 10 favorite and leading all the way won easily by a length and a half with Bohemian second and Hulls Eye third Kuroki Pegasus Holscher and Royal Sceptre ran unplaced The track was slow and tlie race run in 210 It was worth 14550 to the victors owner At the same meeting June 30 he was badly beaten in the Advance Stakes at a mile and threeeighths running unplaced It was won by Flip Flap in such extreniely fast time as 217 with Whimsical second and The Quail a good but unlucky colt third Tlie unplaced ones were Cairngorm Sir Huon Accountant and Bohemian As it was a weightforage race all ran on equal terms Whimsical ran the first mile in i SJi with Accountant at her head and the latter tired badly in the stretch His next essay was at ¬ tended with better results This was when he won the Lawrence Realization run July K H was favorite at 12 to 5 and won but barely got home first by a head after a long hard drive through the stretch with Kiitree Tlie latter b it Bulls Eye a length for second place and Ormondale McKittredge and Bohemian ran unplaced The time 248 was fast and the race worth 15310 to the winner winnerHe He was not raced again until August 4 when he won the Brighton Derby It was a gift for him and as a 1 to 4 favorite should lie won in a canter from Samson with Albert F third and Flim nap unplaced August 23 he won the Saratoga Derby but not without some trouble in disposing of Gallavant by threequarters of a length Mc ¬ Kittredge being a distant third His success in the Annual Champion Stakes was easily achieved He was skillfully reserved in close pursuit of the leaders for a mile and a half then shot Into the lead and won by three lengths Ironsides finishing second and Bedouin third With a number of valuable engagements to come it was freely pre ¬ dicted that Accountants winnings as a threeyear old would go over the 100000 mark Such was not tlie case however as the Annual Champion Stakes marked his last appearance on the turf He went
