NEW YORK RACING OF 1918 MARKED BY A BIG INCREASE OF THE TOTAL DISTRIBUTED AMONG WINNING OWNERS The New York field of racing was one of prosperity and gratify ig returns this year Compared with 117 then1 was a gain of the quite substantial sum of SlSJllti i i distribution to owners snd for the first time in many years there was a total output of more than a uillion dollars In part this was dm to the extension of the autumn season of racing Considering tha the New York jockey clubs aro forced to rely almost entirely on gate receipts for their revenues th ir linancial showing for 101S is reallv admirable With the coming of peace to the sorely tried world ml the return of many thousands of our young men from the fields of battle it may be safe to assume that they will experience an even greater measure of patronage and prosperity next year yearBecause Because of its unique position and advantages in American racing the Saratoga Association leads in the total sum distributed and the daily average of distribution In both particulars the Westchuster Itacing Association is second followed in order by the Queens County Jinkey Club Empire City Jockey Club and Metropolitan Jockey Club their combined daily average of payments to owners being the hand ¬ some sum of SMlV It is understood that whili no great profits were gained by any of the racing Ixidies none of them failed to take in more than they paid out so that in any event the sport was self sunporting which is about all it ought to be anyhow As showing the steady advancement of New York racing since its resumption in 1013 it is interesting to compare the 4 CMot raceil for that year with the lltiJ of IMS Following are tabulalf jns giving in detail the particulars of this years New York turf campaign together with highly
