IN FAVOR OF NEW ORLEANS RACING H A Morgan Member of Louisiana Legislature Tells Why Sport Should Be Encouraged New Orleans LSI November 20 Ratins should lp encouraged as a medium for the promotion of better live stock in Louisiana according to H Ar ¬ thur Morgan member of the General Assembly who is visiting in Nov Orleans this week Mr Morgan is closely allied with the farming interests of this state being a member of the Fanners Union a member of the executive committee of the Louisiana Farmers Union secretary of the Association State Farmers Union Presidents and a stock raiser liiniT self selfMr Mr Morgan explained his attitude in the follow in statement There statementThere is one phase of the racing question which I doubt if many people in the cities even those who largely patronize it have given much thought and to my mind this is one of the most important features from the farmers standpoint it en ¬ courages the breeding of highgrade live stock There is not a stock farm where race horses are bred but what you will find other highgrade animnls as well such as cattle hogs and even poul ¬ try and it is not every animal that is raised on a raring farm that is suitable for racing in fact the bulk of those raised are not suitable and these are sold for other purposes Even those that do turn out good racers are frequently rendered by some incident unfit for racing purposes but they are valuable for other uses Louisiana is now attracting attention all over the world as a desirable section for the raising of thoroughbred stock of all kinds and the race track is a testing ground for live stock generally as wherever you see a race track you will invariably find live stock fairs held at some seasons of the year and at these fairs they not only display the live stock of the farm but farm products generally generallyWAR WAR EXCUSE REMOVED REMOVEDThe The war is over peace has been declared and this removes that excuse but I contend that even had the war continued racing should not have been prohibited as there is no question but what horses are getting scarce In the country and perhaps scarcer now than ever before and the fine breeding farms of Louisiana can be counted on the fingers of cue hand when it is a fact that practically every parish in the state should have several fine stock farms of a smaller or greater degree degreeIn In addition to this we are threatened with a meat famine and the raising of beef cattle must be encouraged and it costs no more in fact not as much to feed a good animal than it does a poor one oneI I was gratified to see where several merchants in New Orleans who had signed petitions against racing have reversed themselves and come out strongly in favor of having racing in New Orleans this winter winterAlthough Although many of my associates in the legis ¬ lature differed with me when the question arose in Baton Rouge I expressed myself in favor of encouraging racing for above and many other reasons reasonsThe The gambling feature does not appeal to me at all I am opposed to it but if we should prohibit everything and close every place of amusement where crowds gather becauise there arc some un ¬ desirable persons present it would result in closing every theater
