KENTUCKYS RACING RETURNS OF MONEY WON WONBY BY OWNERS AT ITS LEXINGTON CHURCHILL CHURCHILLDOWNS DOWNS DOUGLAS PARK AND ANDLATONIA LATONIA MEETINGS Kentucky racing people have no good reason for being discontented with the results of the state turf campaign of this year It is true the money derived from Kentucky as a racing field was but slightly in excess of the similar returns of 1917 but the latter was a year of such lavish distribution of money won among owners that it set iip a record in that respect hard to surpass But it was sur ¬ passed and if the influenza epidemic had not forced the curtailment of the Latonia fall meeting the Kentucky showing for the year would have been much better than it wus It is to be observed that the only falling ofE was at Latcnia the Lexington Churchill Downs and Douglas Park tracks all making substantial gains over 1917 in their aggregates of money distributed There was a remarkably close race in this feature between the two lastnamed tracks the decision going to Douglas Park by the in ¬ significant sum of 45 There was one item of generous amount raised by the Kentucky racing interests which does not appear here That was the splendid donation of 300000 to the Red Cross to which breeders racing organizations owners jockeys and trainers in short all hands high ami low contributed to their lasting honor In one matter the New Louisville Jockey Club maintained its longestablished superiority that being the daily average of money distributed It will probably be hard to retain that honor in 1919 Lafonias 5QKJO Latpnia Championship Stakes and its 20000 added Derby of next year seem almost certain to transfer it tb the Covington track unless new races of importance are added to the Churchill Downs program thtir stable but they had a number that could gallop fast These were so sagaciously placed in their races that few racing days passed in which they did not take one or more of the fat purses characteristic of tlie Kentucky campaign The net result of the capture of fortyseven races gave them an uncontested leadership for the year E U Uradley did exceedingly well in the spring and early summer racing but his horses seemed to lose form after that and his campaign on the eastern tracks and in Kentucky fall racing was compara ¬ tively barren of favorable results Still he brought up iii second place a few hundred in advance of B J Hranioi The latter owes his attainment of third place chisfly to liis possessiou of the good two year old Colonel Livingston which unluckily like Jillv Kelly is Leding and accordingly will be ineligible to the Derbys of next year extermi ¬ nators Kentucky Derby and Latonia Cup account for W S Kilmers fourth place in the winning owners list a list which shows twentytwo winners of 10 HMor more Among these T C McDowell did not have his customary good fortune and all aroniul had a lean year in racing Jefferson Liv ¬ ingston did not have the the horses raced over the Kentucky tracks Exterminator was the sensation When he started In the Kentucky Detby his inclusion in the field excited no consideration and when he won the big nice it was put down as a fluke But his subse ¬ quent career in nicing dispelled this illusion and when he returned to Kentucky in the fallto win the two milos and a quarter Latonia Cup it was with the wellearned reputation of being one of the best threeyearolds of 1918 But the best race horse in Kentucky racing was the splendid Cudgel His feat of taking up 132 pounds and running a mile and a quarter in 203 when winning the Kentucky Handicap at Douglas Park was one of rare excellence The racing of the year was punctuated and adorned with contests of the highest quality in which such others as Johren Billy Kelly Beaverkill Escoba Colonel Llvingston Fruit Cake Leochares Rancher Viva America Lucky B Grundy Delico FauxCpl Batter Cake Hollister Sun God Regalo Freeciitter Pif 3e and many others gave
