ELATED OVER HAVANAS OPENING DAY Manager Brown Says Largest Crowd in History of Course Was Present Great Season Ahead HAVANA Cuba December 9 Manager H D Brown of the Culm American Jockey Club was liigh ly elated over the auspicious owning of the winter meeting at Oriental Park yesterday The largest crowd in the history of tlie course was present The iPl earance of President Mtnocal in the stewards stand during the running of the sixth race was the occasion for a demonstration in honor of the popular chief executive of Cuba The president is an ardent KiKtrtsmaii and finds keen pleasure and recreation in an afternoon of racing He is one of the best friends of the sport on the island and his support lias done much to popularize racing among the Cubans CubansAVliile AVliile only horses of mediocre class were engaged in Sundays races nevertheless the evenly matched caliber of those participating made up for what was lacking in quality The racing wa spirited with tin finishes in si majoritj of the races so close and stubbornly contested as to urouse the enthu ¬ siasm of the bis crowd to its highest pitch pitchThere There are more and liettur class horses here than ever l efore and it will not be long before they will appear In action assuring sport of a standard comparing favorably with the best ever offered at n winter track since the days of California racing Prospects are indeed bright for a wonderful sea ¬ son surpassing in all particulars the successful one of last year
