FAIR GROUNDS STAKE ARRAY Eleven Stellar Events Provided by Business Mens Association Over 250000 to Be Distributed Among Horsemen Long Dis ¬ tance Racing Featured NEW ORLEANS La December 14 The condi ¬ tions for the eleven stakes to be decided at the Fair Grounds meeting in this city which opens January 1 and fontiiines for a period of fiftyfour racing days closing March 4 have just been made public by racing secretary Joseph McLennan A perusal of them would indicate that the manage ¬ ment f the track intends catering to the horses of th first class thJlt can race over a long distance for eight out of the eleven events are at one mile or over leaving lint three stakes for the sprinters sprintersTliis Tliis arrangement meets with the hearty approval of all real lovers of high class sport who believe that the long distance races help to develop and bring out the host qualities of the thoroughbred hnree According to the stake conditions there will Re three events at the distance ofone mile one at me mile and a sixteenth two at one mile and an eighth one at one mile and i quarter one at two miles anl one at the stamina testing distance of two miles and a quarter One of these long distance affairs will be for threeyearolds exclusively while tlie remainder will be for thiyeyearolds and over There are no stakes for twoyearolds but tlie young horses will be given ample opportunity throughout the meeting to show their worth in the 1000 overnight handicaps that will be carded es ¬ pecially for them themTlie Tlie New Yoar Handicap as indicated by its title will pbe decided the opening day of the meeting The llync Handicap will be decided the following Sat ¬ urday and tlie other stakes run off every Saturday thereafter Among the titles selected for these are 1orrhing Iluig DEspsrey Mangin Focli Allenby Washingtons Birthday Uartin Belirmann and Car ¬ nival Handicaps The last named is at one mile and t quarter and will feature the card tlie closing day of the season In order to insnre good fields entries to these stakes will iiot close until one week prior to thf dit on which each stake is to be run All of them have a uniform added money value of lr 00 00Racing Racing secretary Joseph McLennan is busily en ¬ gaged compiling the book of conditions for tlie first ntrks racing With the great wealth of material to draw fron he proposes to make the racing department are enthusiasts m the subject of long distance races and these will be featured through the meeting On every Thurs ¬ day during the season there will be no race less than a aile ia distance except the race for twoyear olds Tlie New York Jockey Club rule that calls for a race at one mile and a quarter or over on alternate days will also be adopted Printed notices with the inost important provisions that will govern tho racing have already been jwsted on the grounds groundsDuring During the course of the fiftyfour days of racing the association will distribute among the horsemen in stakes and purses an aggregate of S2542C The daily distribution of purses for the seven races will lie as follows Three purses valued at 500 three of SliOO and one of 1000 On stake days the 1000 purse will be omitted Should the latter on any day fail to fill the other purses for that day will be increased so as to make a uni ¬ form distribution of 4300 On stake days the total
