DE ROTHSCHILD STUD TO CONTINUE Captain Anthony de Rothschild to Carry On in Breeding and Racing as Heir to Leopold de Rothschild. Owing to the death of Leopold do Rothschild, followed all too quickly by that of Major Evelyn, the Palace House establishment has of late been more or less under a cloud, but a successor as enthusiastic as either of those much lamented sportsmen has been found in Capt. Anthony, who has become the sole owner of the stud. It is true that owing to other and more Important duties at the war office Capt. Anthony has had little time to attend race meetings, but the spirit was always willing, and no doubt he will resume his regular patronage of the turf now that a return to the normal is to be expected. The breeding stud at Southcourt has been maintained under the able nirectloii of Mr. Ashby, and as recently as last week we hud evidence of fresh enterprise in the purchase of Doro for 4,000 guineas. This is a mare of extraordinary breeding, taking in all the best strains favored by the late Mr. Houldsworth, who was one of the most scientific of breeders. Thus we find Doro tracing back to Springfield son of St. Albans, Hampton. Sunshine, Thormanby, Chanticleer and Kay Middleton. and her value at Ascot will be all the greater for the reason that she is void of the Gnlopin blood, which is claimed by most of the mares there. Furthermore, she is considered certain in foal to Swynford, and the produce should add to her list of winners. Capt. de Rothschild may be relied on to maintain the traditional family interest in racing and breeding, and under his auspices the blue and yellow colors will be as popular as ever, though that is saving much. It is eminently satisfactory that he should have struck off well with a couple of smart two-year-olds in Ralloer Li!;ht and Violoncello, though neither has escaped one or other of the ills horseflesh is heir to, and it is unlucky that the cntrv of the former for the Derby should be void, as It was made in the name of Maj. Evelyn, who entered all the colts, while the fillies appeared in the name or their present owner. The rule dealing with void nominations needs amendment, and, remembering the National Stud entries, I wonder if the alxive nomination would have been valid had Galloper Light been "named" by the Southcourt Stud. Galloper Light is in the "New" Derby, but we all hope that race will not take place, A PROMISING COLT. The colts record entitles him to a prominent place among the two-year-olds, and the impression made when he disposed of The Panther over the Rous Course may yet be confirmed, for there is no reason why one should not improve as much as the oilier. Except that Galloper Light made a bold show under difficulties his running counts for nothing in the New Coventry Stakes, as he was virtually left at the post, and there-was also excuse for liim later, as he had been coughing, and though he won the Madingley Stakes easily, enough from I-idv Farmer, he was not seen at his best again, sail Hit as was his effort to give ten pounds to The la ther and sixteen to Kayuda in the Autumn Stakes. Hence his withdrawal from the ClearivelJ and Criterion, but fortunately there are no ill-effects from his ailment, and having recently seen him stripped in his box-I can vouch for it that no hoiande could look better. Like his sire, which came on by leaps and bounds from two to three years old. Galloper Light, which stands sixteen hands high, appears to be thriving exceedingly, having developed power to n lcmtrknble extent nnd improved greatly in appearance; in fact, be has grown into a beautiful horse of superb quality, and, as far as I know, thoroughly sound in ever respect. He has only to continue in the way he is going to make up into a high-class three-year-old. His dam has, unfortunately, no yearling, but her filly-foal by Diadu-nienos, if not a big one. is sharp looking, and oanta Finn Is now in foal to Suustar again. "Vigilant in London Sportsman. i
