i ; SUSPENSIONS AND OTHER PUNISHMENT METED OUT DURING 1918 FOR INFRACTIONS OF THE RULES OF RACING Infractions of the rules of racing are "punished in a measure commensurate with the nature of the offense. To the credit and honesty of the sport the stewards of the various racing organizations are but infrequently called on to inllict the extreme penalty, "ruling off for life." The majority of suspensions during a years racing are for minor ofTenses, with reinstatement following the expiration of the specified term of punishment. In the cases of -jockeys more penalties are inflicted for disobedience and rough riding than for any other causes.
