SANFORD STABLE FOR 1919 Little Tippity Witchet the Main Reliance in Handicap Division High Hopes Entertained in Six ¬ teen Fashionably Bred Two Year Olds NEW YORK N Y March 17 With twenty four horses foreign and domestic bred John San ford will start the season of 1919 Preston Burch their trainer is as proud of them as a boy with a new set of toys He speaks of them as pets more than racing material alluding to a colt as a boniiie little chap or an affectionate little miss when drawing attention to a goodlooking and playful filly When approaching the little gelding Tippity Witchet he will say Now come and look at my little woolly bear The comparison is acceptable for this little son of Broomstick Lady Frivoles is not an eighth of an inch bigger than lie was as a twoyearold full of life and spirits with a bear coat on him and as punchy as a pumpkin Little Tip as he is known among the stable hands may not beat the lordly Cudgel or make Roamer take a rear seat but there is a chaiice be will give them an argument if he should meet them He Avas given but three races last yeari winning the first in a canter in a moderate field and running third in the remaining two races at Saratoga in one race giving Extermimitor a serious argument to beat him for second place His final start was in the Saranac Handicap in which he was beaten two lengths and a half by Motor Cop and The Porter at little difference in weight Tippity weightTippity Witchet may be the mainstay of the stable in handicaps though Achilles will probably become a useful horse after his long letup since last spring AchiUes only ran two races last year winning the first and holding third place in a sub equentBprintingT viyGn by laut Frank In tnfe latter he had a rough race throughout or he might have won On form he is at least as good as Trompe La Mort which won the Metropolitan Han ¬ dicap and ran third in the Withers to Motor Cop and Cum Sab This will give some line on his promise if he trains satisfactorily Tippity Witchet and Achilles are the only two horses in the stable that have passed their third year After yearAfter these come six threeyearolds of which Tuscaloosa is probably the best She is a stake winner of more than ordinary merit Her victory in the Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga was her best nice when she beat Herodias and Terentia in an easy manner She never lived up to that nice afterward and was somewhat of a disappointment In comment Mr Burch has little to say about her probably being undecided just to how she will loom up as a threeyearold She may be a fickle filly witii moods and whims of her own ownGRANDLYBRED GRANDLYBRED TWO YEAR OLDS OLDSOf Of the sixteen twoyearolds many of which are extremely attractive a domesticbred colt named Pocatello by Mohawk II Cayudutta foaled at Hurricana Farm Mr Sanfords breeding establish ¬ ment at Amsterdam is the most admired He is a strapping chestnut and his career will be watched closely by government officers as Mohawk II is now the property of Uncle Sam being presented to the country for breeding purposes by Mr Sanford last year Besides this one there are some royally bred twoyearolds in the barns of domestic and foreign blood If breeding will insure a good horse Heatherton will surely succeed his bloodlines being of the kings purple This colt is the son of Tracery Louli the dam being by the celebrated racer and sire Flying Fox Mr Jiurch thinks he is the choice of the collection while others lean toward Pocatello and Cordelier the latter a colt by Rabelais Red Cross It will be remembered that Rabelais is the sire of Durbar and Naturalist the former the winner of the Epsom Derby when owned by the late Herman Duryea Of the young fillies 1 lucent in is a handsome creature a daughter of Bayardo Scammony Bayardo was in demand for stud purposes until lie died some three years ago A colt that will demand attention is Irish Dream the first of the progeny of The Curragh dam the fast mare Trance In Trance The Curragh was given an excellent opportunity to show his quality as a sire Trance being a mare of exceeding speed speedIn In commenting upon the entire stable Mr Burch says We may not have another George Smith in the group but we have some goodlooking and promising twoyearolds One does not get a George Smith every year While referring to George Smith I might incidentally mention that his stud engagements were all assigned to selected mares from about one hundred applications for his services Among them are such famous dams as those of Bulse Exterminator Hodge Skeptic the latter winner of the Canadian Derby G M Miller and Daydue I not wily hope but I think he will prove to be one of the noted sires of this country Even now lie is exceedingly popular with breeders scores being disappointed at not being able to pro ¬ cure his service Mr Sanford did not have a suc ¬ cessful racing season in 1918 concluded Mr Burch but we have some bright prospects this year es ¬ pecially in the younger division of horses horsesFollowing Following is the list of horses that will race in Mr Sunfords colors and be trained by Preston liurch liurchAchilles Achilles b h 5 by Star
