SEEMS A GOOD YEAR FOR FILLIES Elfin Queen Milkmaid Pen Rose Terentia and Others Have Excellent Racing Credentials BALTIMORE Md March 17 A better band of threeyearold fillies than will lie ready at 1imlico in May to make the Inaugural meeting of the 000 rimlico Oaks a memorable incident in Ameri ¬ can racing has possibly not been seen on this side of the Atlantic in three decades The racing season of 101t as regards the number and quality of the threeyearold runners of the feminine sex it will develop will suggest no season so much as that of 190 which saw Artful win the Brighton Handi ¬ cap from Beldame and Ort AVells Tanya Artfuls stable companion whip ISIandy and Hot Shot in the Belmout Stakes and Tradition hold her own with the leaders of the threeyearold colts over long distances of ground groundIredicting Iredicting the appearance of another Artful which by many discriminating students of racing is considered as great a thoroughbred as has ap ¬ peared on this side of the Atlantic sounds like going big into phophecy Nevertheless there is sound reason for making such a prediction And one is on eminently safe ground when one prophe ¬ sies that there will be better threeyearold runners of the softer sex under silks this year than was either Tradition or Tanya The season of 1918 was prolific of fast twoyearolds and in Terentia Milkmaid Ormouda Klfin Queen Ten Rose Batter Cake Tuscaloosa Merry Princess Passing Shower and a few others the fillies matched th colts and geldings of which Billy Kelly Eternal AVar Pen ¬ nant Dnnboxne Colonel Livingston He Frank Sweep On Cirrus and Hannibal were the stars starsThere There was a time last spring when Klfin Queen an extremely well set up daughter of Disguise Sprite could show a clean pair of heels to the fast ¬ est colts Hal K Knapps homebred filly trained off a bit about the time the horses went to Sara ¬ toga but she was put by immediately and she has matured into a comely threeyearold Some pro ¬ fess to doubt whether Elfin Queen will maintain her speed over a long distance of ground but she is entitled to the benefit of the doubt until it is demonstrated that she cannot And Elfin Queen is going to show what she can do in Maryland in the spring springPecause Pecause the r 000 Maryland Oaks has made it worth while and an exceedingly mild winter lias made training possible Elfin Queen and all the other crack fillies with a raft of secondraters several of which may improve iiito cracks will be in Maryland in April Most of them will race at Havre de Grace in preparation for the bigger show at Pimlico PimlicoTERENTIA TERENTIA A COMING CRACK CRACKCommander Commander J K L Ross of Montreal believes that he has at Laurel Park the prospective three yearold filly1 star in Milkmaid and there is no denying that this daughter of Peep oDay is a racer of high quality Siie certainly was as good as the best colts at Relmont Park Laurel and Pim ¬ lico last fall Hut AV R Coe of New York is equally confident that he has the coming crack in Terentia a daughter of Cicero and Queenlet which came from the other side There was never a time last year when the colts could take liberties with Terentia and Terentia lias wintered splendidly at Pelmont Park This daughter of Cicero is a miss of the Artful type big rangy and uniformly de ¬ veloped feminine to the tips of her pointed ears but powerful If ever a filly showed long distance running promise Terentia did that last year Itatter Cake another English miss probably will race in the west Hut she may come east in May It will be remembered that her owner Edward K Bradley proprietor of the Idle Hour Stud in Kentucky sent Kalitan this way a few years back to win the Preakness PreaknessPen Pen Hose a fleet daughter of Sweep which won more races last year than any other eastern two yearold is training at Gravesend for the Oaks James Boden her trainer has announced that she will have a couple of preparatory races nt Havre de Grace in May Pen Rose will find herself in familiar environment in Maryland next spring It was at Havre de Grace and Pimlico last year that slie first won races and public notice She is bred to go on Sweep won the Bclmont and the Lawrence Realization of his threeyearold season Her dam llanrose is a daughter of Hanover HanoverMerry Merry Princess which is owned by P A Clark is an English daughter of Spanish Prince and Merri ¬ ment which disclosed highclass speed at Saratoga and Belmont Park She is wintering at Belmont Park and will come this way itli her brilliantly successful stable companion Dunboyne which is preparing for the 25000 Preakness which will be the richest of American races this year in added money moneyOrmonda Ormonda wljich is to bear the silks of Samuel Uoss of Washington in the Oaks is a strapping daughter of SuiMirman She won in Maryland last spring Ormonda has as stable companion Henry A Porters High Born Lady of which great things are expected Tuscaloosa the best of John Sanfords twoyearolds of last year is training for the Oaks at Jamaica JamaicaThese These are the twoyearold fillies of last year which seem like prospective threeyearold stars There are others that did not show so well last year but which may improve notably Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Pigeon Wing C E Clements Frizeur a half sister of Mary Maud and Crimper Richard F Car ¬ mans Anntio Frederick Housemans Aunt Dinah James Fitzsimmons Ballet Dancer II a halfsister of The Porter E R Bradleys Blushing Beauty W R Coes Herodias and Athlone and Joseph E Davis Ophelia OpheliaOphelia Ophelia which won her first race at Pimlico last spring proved a remarkably tough campaigner Athlone an English daughter of Charles OMalley and Dodragh showed promising form at Bowie last NovemlKr
