THEYRE OFF AT MARYLAND Record Attendance Sees Opening OpeningDays Days Racing at Bowie i Three Victories for Arthur Fran cis Confederacy Amaze a Grand Looker T BOAVIK Mil April 1 The Maryland spring season of racing opened at Prince George Park today with a record crowd in attendance The weather was clear and the track at its best Trans ¬ portation facilities from Haltimore were totally inadequate to accommodate the large number of racing patrons desirous of being present at Howies initial day of sport Manager OHara says that the senfee from Haltimore will be considerably im ¬ proved in a few days It was election dayi in Haltimore and a semiholiday which in a measure contributed to making the days attendance at Prince George Park the largest in the history of that course courseThe The J ArthurT Francis confederacy carried off the honors of opening day by winning three race Margery accounting for the Second Rolster the fourth and Lord Herbert the fifth Holsters victory came in the League Handicap the prin ¬ cipal attraction of the afternoon and was a sterling performance on the part of the Englishbred colt Edward McBrides Joseph P Murphy quickly as ¬ sumed a big lead right at the start and main ¬ taining his advantage to the last eighth it looked like an easy win for Iilin when suddenly he began to tire and Bolster which after beginning slowly nioved up steadily and with a Jerrific burst of speed caught ami passed the Jeader a few yard from home to draw away and win by four lengths with the spectators wildly cheering cheeringMargerys Margerys success in the second was achieved by a nose after a spirited stretch drive with Refugee the latter racing Tiger Rose into defeat at the half mile post Lord Herbert had little trouble winning Ins race drawing away from Antoinette after Harry Hreivogel the pacemaker tired enter ¬ ing the stretch stretchR R F Carmans old campaigner Startling proved too good for his more seasoned opponents in the Inaugural Pnrsennd ltd all the way to win bv two lengths LeydeckerAmaze from Roi Craig and Charlie Leydecker Amaze a grand looking son of Hroomstick Daisy F triumphed over a hand of baby racers in the opening dash in a manner suggesting that he mav be a colt above the ordinary ordinaryWilliam William AValker who has just returned from New Orleans predicts a shortage of horses for next winters racing if there is racing in Canada He thinks many of the owners who raced last winter will rest after the summer season closes Horses need a rest after a seasons campaigning said Mr AAalker and it was only the cessation of racing in Canada that caused so many horses to be raced at New Orleans and Havana With racing normal which is promising for this season winter tracks will be begging for horses in my opinion Horsemen had a tongh time making both ends meet last winter winterAVilliam AVilliam Garth has twenty horses in his strin at the present time all of which are in good con ¬ dition In the string are ten twoyearolds six jumpers and four flat racers I think I have some nice twoyearolds said Mr Garth but we never can tell Must of them have been working half miles around fifty seconds a tiiey will do a lot better when in contest As a whole they are equal if not better than I usually have at the beginning
