tinuous Three Year Old Thoroughbred Stake in America Eter ¬ nal Vindex and Regalo Also in Public Favor as Shown by the Odds That there is much of fine sentiment attaching to racing is annually demonstrated when the recognized greater races reach their time of de cision Staid selfcontained Englishmen of all grades from King to costermonger gather in hundreds of thousands on Epsom Downs to witness the i running of the world famous Epsom Derby dubbed by Disraeli The Blue Riband of the Turf Similar vast throngs of Frenchmen assemble in the BpisdeBoulpgne to worship the winner of the Grand Prize of Paris These races are as like other races as peas in a pod in that a field QI horses assembles at the starting post and from there contend over a course for a prescribed distance But they differ radically from other races in that attract thousands who rarely go to the races on other occasions There was a Derby formerly decided each year in Chicago in the pleasant month of June which would by this time have been the uncon tested first race of North America had racing continued to flourish here unmolested It was the fixed intention of the Washington Park officials to ultimately raise the value of the American Derby to 50000 added Had that intention been carried into effect that race would have been a ax4 x4 national affair by this time Even as i was theAmeriXan Jierby in its Jast few years ivas annually witnessed by authentically greater gather ings of spectators than any other racelri the Friited States In some measure it has come about that the Kentucky Derby is now in the place that was designed for the American Derby Long interest i i ing mainly to KentucMans it has grown in public esteem until it no more belongs to Kentucky alone When the Derby horses line up at the bar i rier this afternoon there will be thousands there who will have traveled long distances to see the race the majority of whom will straightway depart for their homes unmindful of the other good to follow in the racing course of the Churchill Downs meeting It is safe to say that every state in the Union as well as Canada will be represented there It is a fine thing in the fortunes of any race to thus attain the dignity of being at least seminational in character As long as it remains such its popularity and attracting powers will gain year by year Regardless of the facts of the case it has long been the custom of Kentucky scribes to each year aver the pending Kentucky Derby to be greater than any and all of its predecessors even though it was destined to fall to such commoners as Chant Judge HimesElwood Agile or Donau But this year there is fair ground for such bragging last the twoyearolds in year our racing were really excellent and the best of them are in the Derby It is a long time since so many highclass threeyearolds were eligible to start in this race If only Billy Kelly Eternal Vindex Regalo Sir Barton and Be Frank went to the post a race would be forthcoming worth a long journey to see But some others are going to the post in fact a field of fifteen starters will not be at all surprising If the track is heavy a lesser number will probably go From goFrom the time the racing public had an opportunity to scan the Kentucky Derby entry list the two star twoyearolds of 1918 Billy Kelly and Eternal have been deservedly the favorites Both are young horses of high class and deserve their favoritism on the basis of their records in rac ing Billy Kelly was the best twoyearold although beaten a head by Eternal in their remarkable clash in the John R Mclean Cup at Laurel last fall Some of his feats in racing rank with anything on record as when he took up 135 pounds and ran the threequarters in 1 11 in winning the Grab Bag Handicap at Saratoga Nothing better than this has been done in American racing In winning two stake races at Havre de Grace this spring racingEternal he has shown himself to be in form and last year he proved himself to be as good in muddy as in drytrack racing Eternal like his formidable rival runs well in any sort of going and is a fast and powerful young horse He gained the fame last year of being the leading money winner of 1918 He won his first race last year then was beaten in two running unplaced to Billy Kelly in the United States Hotel Stakes then won his last five races in a row one of them being the 30000 Hopeful Stakes He has had a careful preparation for todays big race and in every way has met his trainers requirements It is presumed that Sailor will go to the post with him as will Sir Barton with Billy Kelly Sir Barton is a half brother to the famous Sir Martin ran second in last years Futurity and has a maidens allowance of ten pounds poundsVindex Vindex is regarded with considerable favor as a Whitney candidate usually is He is a big and extremely powerful colt owing paternity to the English sire St Victrix He did nothing of note in last years racing his sole success being in a purse race at Saratoga But he showed himself a much improved horse when he won the Susquehanna Handicap at the recent Havre de Grace meeting giving Foreground twenty pounds scale weight arid more to Franklin and Douglass S to say nothing of conceding eleven pounds to Star Hampton It was this race which induced his trip to Trmisvillfl to takft Tiis nliflTiPfi in the Dfirhv Last year Colonel Livingston was the best of the western colts He will not be a Derby contender Leg troubles have put him on the shelf temporarily it is to be hoped Regalo was the best western filly She is better still as a threeyearold as her victories in the Ashland Oaks and the Blue Grass Stakes at Lexington amply attest In the latter she ran a mile and an eighth in 151 with her Derby weight up and gave an easy beating tp such other Derby candidates as Under Fire Sennings Park American Ace Stockwell Vulcanite and St Bernard This was an impos ¬ ing performance It was at once recognized that she is vested with a genuine chance to equal the example furnished by Regret when she captured the Derby in 1915 and exploded the tradition that a filly could not win the Kentucky Derby As a matter of fact few fillies have contested the Derby and it is largely to this circumstance rather than inability to run as far and fast as the colts that they have such a scanty record in the history of the race Regalo is a good mud runner and the present prospect is for a heavy track trackBe Be Frank is a son of tough and speedy old Sir John Johnson and is a tough customer hjmself He ran in eleven races last year and besides besidesContinued Continued on second pa e HISTORIS KENTUCKY DERBY RACE Continued from flrst page winning six of them was second or third in three more In all his races he demonstrated the possession of a high order of speed and the ability to carry weight easily Having no en ¬ gagements in the big stakes for twoyearolds he did not meet the recognized stars of his age except in the Walden Stakes in which he was unplaced to War Pennant Milkmaid and Thun ¬ derstorm Subsequently he defeated Milkmaid in his last race of the year He is reported to have improved greatly and with Butwell up has a dangerous outsiders chance chanceOn On the form of last years racing the winner of this years Derby should and probably will come from the foregoing group But there are nearly always others than the favorites to be considered in racing Last year after Sun Briar was given up owner Kilmer and trainer McDaniel slipped over to Lexington bought Exterminator from J C Milam and won the Derby with him This spring Mormon proved beneath consideration as a Derby candidate so again a visit to Lexington and the purchase of Frogtown from J C Milam to try to repeat the Exterminator coup Except the running of the Derby the parallel is complete and will bring Frogtown many supporters He did noth ¬ ing of note as a twoyearold nor for that matter did Exterminator It was fast work this spring that led to his purchase and his running in the Derby will be followed with much curiosity curiosityAs As for the others which will try for the honors of the big race they seem outclassed We should soon know whether the seeming is correct or not Here is the Derby estimate of one of the best trainers in America one that has won a Derby himself with an outsider and has trained more than one champion He has been in Kentucky since racing opened this year yearIf If the track is heavy the result should be Ross entry McCleland entry Regalo RegaloIf If the track is fast the result should be
