BELMONT PARK RACING BEGINS TODAY Prospects Are for Unfavorable Weather and Heavy Track Good Held for Metropolitan NEW YORK N Y May 21 Unless there is an extraordinary change in the weather the AVest hester Racing Associations spring meeting at Belmont Park tomorrow will be ushered in under conditions entirely unfavorable for the proper en ¬ joyment of outdooV sport It rained today and more i anticipated This will make a heavy track for the running of the Metropolitan Handicap in which eleven highclass horses are carded to start The weather conditions will make the result quite un ¬ certain in fact there is a second contingent ac ¬ cording to owners and trainers This is the new track From trainers observations the track has been wonderfully improved for dry weather but being built on sandstone bottom the mud causes horses to step through the new soil on to the sandstone which becomes slippery Such experts as T J Healey and A J Joyner are both dubious as to what horses will be able to run in the heavy going because of the uncertainty of the track Horses slip and slide around at least they did tliis morning said Mr Healey It may be bet ¬ ter tomorrow The track is wonderfully fast and good in dry weather but in the mud it is a bit dangerous dangerousAn An excellent card has been prepared for the opening day including the Metropolitan Handicap ami the New York Steeplechase The probable start ¬ ers and jockeys for the Metropolitan are areHorse Horse Jockey JockeyPapp KelsayLanlus Papp AA Kelsay Lanlus J Loftus LoftusHollister Hollister M Buxton BuxtonLuculllte Luculllte TaplinCorn E Taplin Corn Tassel L Ensor EnsorRoutledge Routledge E Ambrose Sweep On L McAtee McAteeStar Star Master W Knapp KnappForeground Foreground E Sande SandeTronipe Tronipe La Mort T Nolan NolanNaturalist Naturalist C Fairbrother FairbrotherThere There is a rumor that Flags may be added to the Metropolitan Should he start jockey Lyke will ride rideM M Buxton will leave for Louisville Thursday night to HandicapJohn ride Royce Rools in the Kentucky Handicap John McTaggurt will start riding again at Bel inont Park having recovered from the accident lie sustained at Bowie
