SIR BARTON AND ETERNAL ThrceX ThrceXar01d ar01d Cracks Likely to Meet Again in Kear Future FutureNEWt NEWt YORK N Y May 27 It is said that John E Madden offered 50000 for Sir Barton after his racing career is ended but according to the reply of Commander J JC L Ross that sum Avould hardly buy one of liis cars Commander Ross Avill go extensively into breeding oh liis neAv Maryland farm and Sir Barton AAill be the monarch there But from all account Sir Bartons career will not be over until he has displayed some of liis ability over the fast Saratoga track and he may hang up a new figure for the Belmont in AAhich Eternal is not entered but he will have to spread out to beat the record Hourless made two years ago AAhen he AVOH on the Belraont course a mile and threeeighths in 217J Yet there are those who predict Sir Barton AAill do it if necessary to win It is a feat to be envied for a horse to Avin three stakes in suc ¬ cession like the Kentucky Derby the Preakness and the Withers It is a goodly record with more honors in sight This too in addition to his traveling from Maryland to Kentucky for the one race then back again to Maryland for the next and from there to Belmont Park Trainer Bcdwcll last fall believed ir Barton to be ji better horse than Billy Kelly His opinion has been verified both in Avork and in contests A line taken through the performances of Eternal is further proof With Sir Barton and Billy Kelly to rqly upon Commander Ross has the two best horses in all the tlirceyear old events This means that Avhcn they are carded as starters the opposition will be light lightAt At the same time one intist not c st Eternal into the discard Eternal just happens to be along in a year when there is an equine star as was Fair Play in Colins year and as Henry of Navarre in the Domino year To be beaten bv a horse of the strength speed and courage of Sir Barton is no disgrace There yet may be i something in store for Mr McClelland with Kteriml as Sir Barton lias not yet tackled him on a fast track It Avould bo a trcat to see this pair make a race over the Saratoga mile course Avlien it is at its best and especially prepared for such a contest Eternal may not possess the strong constitution of Sir Barton and the plowing he had to do in going through the new part of the Belmout oAal may have taken more out of him than lie could stand On a light ¬ ning fast trackEternal mightmaintain his speed long enough to steal away from Sir Barton and not be caught The time of the Withers sliows the speed Avas uniform the first half mile being run in 12 seconds for each eighth post When the horses struck the new ground the speed AAas reduced to a quarter in 25 seconds and the last quarter was cov ¬ ered in 25 seconds This indicates that Sir Barton did not tire as he won practically under restraint but it docs show that Eternal tired a trifle It as generally conceded that Eternal has a little more xarly speed than Sir Barton but the difference is slight There is no question that Sir Barton is better constructed for endurance enduranceThe The pair Avill meet again and there is a treat in store for the racing crowd that Avill see the contest
