COLUMBINES GREAT RACE Her Victory in Miss Woodford Handicap Spectacular One Steeplechase Marred by Accidents Smite First of J K L Boss BossOwn Own Breeding to Win NEW YORK N Y July 3 The torrid weather prevailing was ideal for good racing and the at ¬ tractive card programmed drew a large attendance to Aqueduct today The feature the Miss Woodford Handicap for fillies and mares attracted a fine band and fell to Columbine after a spectacular ef ¬ fort The Byer mare was pinched back at the start as several others were when Fruit Cake the top weight starting in motion on the outside crossed her opponents to assume a momentary lead only to be quickly displaced by Cobalt Lass with the ultimate winner lengths out of it Rounding the turn the order was about the same but in the final eighth Columbine came with giant strides to catch Cobalt Lass and finally win going away Cobalt Lass with the diminutive Richcreck in the saddle just held on long enough to gain place honors from Rose rtOr while Fruit Cake under her heavy im ¬ post was a tired fourth fourthLeading Leading Star under Walls Judicious handling accounted for the Africander an overnight handi ¬ cap after following Rodgers fast early pace My Friend was second and the early pacemaker third thirdThe The steeplechase was marred by accidents which fortunately developed to be but slight to the two riders who fell The race fell to Mohican wearing the colors for the first time after a long tussle with the heavily supported favorite The Dean The latter finally succumbed to Bronze Eagles challenge at the end and finished third A heavy dust cloud arcco behind thir leaders throughout the race and Mademoiselle Maximo blinded by it fell at the four ¬ teenth jump throwing rider Kennedy heavily The mare lay prostrate for several minutes but was finally removed from the course while Buchanan Brady unseated his rider at the fifteenth jump Campbell suffered a shaking up Cheyne riding Dave Campbell hit one of the beacons rounding the turn and suffered a broken toe toeSmite Smite the winner of the opening race is tin first winner Commander J K L Ross Maryland breeding establishment has produced Her siro Prince Ahmed was a great sprinter when he carried trainer II G Bedwella colors Commander Ross colors were carried to victory by Cudgel on their first appearance in New York but it is doubtful if the result could have been more satisfactory to the Canadian sportsman than todays for Smite is the first of his own breeding to race Bryngar a starter in the sixth was also foaled at the Ross farm farmJ J K L ROSS BEST TWOYEAROLD TWOYEAROLDCommander Commander Ross is said to have introduced his best twoyearold in the maiden race yesterday It was King Thrush by Thrush Silent Queen This is the colt for which he paid 3000 at the Han ¬ cock sale He went to the post with a reputation of fast work without ever being fully extended and It was said that trainer Bedwell expected him to beat Man o War some day King Thrush ran n trifle green and bolted noticeably at the rise of the barrier but Loftus soon straightened him out He had a clear course but could not improve his position to any extent There is little question that King Thrushs first lesson at racing will do him much good goodJames James W McClelland introduced Nancy Ann 1 good sort of filly iu the same race She will win races pretty soon soonKing King Plaudit is a good deal of a disappointment to racing folks here It is considered that he lias been hurried in getting him ready and good judges think that he will improve over what he has shown after a freshening process He has speed ajid is game to the core hut has given tin in races when he was expected to win although hanging on reso ¬ lutely under the whip Had he been rated in his recent race he probably would have raced better betterTwo Two much improved horses that are in good con ¬ dition just now are Minto II and Youneed The former has been masquerading as a selling plater when he obviously belonged in better company After companyAfter the race of Orestes in the Sir Walter Han ¬ dicap he lost whatever prestige he had He had both supportFrank stable and public support Frank Taylor deserves credit for getting the old mare Housemaid into racing condition after practi ¬ cally three years of idleness and the fact that she was unable to deliver a foal through physical de ¬ fects She beat the fast horse Out the Way after he had every advantage Housemaid coming from behind him and wearing him down downFrom From indications there will be more horses at Empire City than the stables can accommodate Tho only relief will come from Canadas opening which is anxiously awaited The Brookdale Handicap to be run next Saturday will be a repetition of the Brooklyn Handicap with probably a few additional starters in the absence of Eternal which is not eligible eligibleAfter After Leading Star carried off the honors in the third nice he galloped out the mile in 140 in preparation for a coming distant engagement Apprentice engagementApprentice Richcreek made his first saddle ap ¬ pearance since his accident at the Jamaica spring meeting meetingSmite Smite was lost to Commander Ross when she was claimed for 3250 after her victory in the first race
