. RACING OF FAMOUS BROOD MARES I ORMONDES DAM, LILY AGNES, A GRAND RACE MARE AND CUP WINNER, BUT ST. SIMONS DAM, ST. ANGELA, COULD ONLY WIN ONE LITTLE RACE FOR MAIDENS By EXILE To continue the list of mares which have bred good winners and otherwise influential horses, I this time begin with Yalta, dam of Bona Vista and Sir Visto. Vista, chestnut. 1879, by Macaroni Verdure, by King Tom, at two won two races, the Prince of Wales Stakes at PoSM aster and Bristol Mile Nursery; at three ran five times, but did not win; at four wen the Great Metropolitan Handicap, two and one-quarter miles, by a head, and the Great York shire Handicap, over the St. Leger course. Vista seems to have been a better stayer than most good brood mares, and is the dam of Bona Vista, winner of the Two Thousand, and s re of Cyllene, and of the Derby and St. Leger winner Sir Visto. Spinaway, bay. 1872, by Macaroni— Queen Bertha, by Kingston, at two won one race; at three won ten races out of twelve starts, including the One Thousand Guineas, Oaks, Nassau Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks, York Cup at two and one-half miles, beating Thunder and Lily Agnes ; Doncaster Stakes, Newmarket Oaks, and became the dam of the Oaks winner Busybody, dam of Meddler. Loved One and the Derby winner Jeddah. Violet Melrose, bay, 1875, by Scottish Chief— Violet, by Thormanby. at two won two small races out of thirteen starts; at three won four out of eight starts, including the Portland Plate, Nottingham; Belgrave Welter, three-quarters; Ebbersham Plate, Epsom; was of poor class; dam of Melton Derby and St. Leger and Editha. Apparently Lily Agnes broke every breeding rule except the Herod. Matchem and Eclipse blending, for she was hard worked, raced with success in her five-year-old form, could carry weight and was at her best over long courses, and on being retired to the stud foaled the horse of the century, Ormonde, besides the One Thousand Guineas winner Farewell, and J.iiamcnt. dam of Sceptre. Star Ruby and Labrador. Windermere, chestnut. 1870, by Macaroni Miss Agnes, by Birdcatcher. at two won her only start, the Filly Stakes at Newmarket. £575; at thre Iwo starts no win; dam of Kendal. Angela, bay, 1865. by King Tom Adeline, by Ion. at two won one race, a maiden plate at Newmarket, out of five sftwpts; at three ran three times, but did not win; dam of St. Simon and Angelica, dam of Orme. Truly these dams of the big winners and famous sires have me groggy. They win and they dont; any number of the best of the race fillies miss fire as brood mares yet a-ain others which showed high class form on the turf, such as Lily Agnes, are productive of win tiers of the best sort. Just now all the Britishers are busy dissecting the pedigree of the "atest two-year-old phenomenon, Tetratema, and seem to doubt his ability to stay. All of them fail to observe, however, thai he is bred Herod to Eclipse, and that this blending of the blood has been productive of the best results in the past. Apparently the doctrine, when breeding to a mare you breed to the blood, to a sire to the individual, holds good.
