OGDENS NEEDED MATCHEM BLOOD DAUGHTERS OF THE FUTURITY WINNER OF 1896 SURE TO ATTAIN HIGH RANK AS BROOD MARES IN OUR BLOODSTOCK BREEDING OF THE FUTURE By EXILE Ogden is getting to be quite an old man now, being foaled 88 far back as 1894. and therefore has about had his say as a sire. Ogden of course is a member of the house of Matchem, and as is the case with so many other members of this line has not been so constant with his vinners as are a number of the Eclipse and Herod horses, but when one of his did put in an appearance it was generally quite good indeed. Few better two-year-olds have raced in this country than Sir Martin, which, on being sent across to England, was not given a proper chance lo become ;;cclimatized. but was put to work light after his arrival. Sir Martin, however, must have been a really good celt as a four year-old on the day he defeated Bachelors Double, Louviers and the veteran Dean Swift for the Coronation Cup at rpsom. Star Jasmine was, as a six-year old, a good race mare indeed, winning he two and one-quarter miles Latonia Cup and beating Stromboli and old Roamer for the Champlain Stakes at Saratoga. The Finn, too. was a clinking good race horse, meeting and defeating in handicaps, always under stiff im posts, the best to be sent against him. As is customary with the Matchem breed the Ogdens rioen somewhat slowly, and therefore are as long as the present hurry-up style of racing is persisted in not likely to be held in quite such high esteem as they would be if more long distance racing was carried on. No one. however, is now much concerned with Ogden*s success as a sire of winners; it is rather the success of his daughters as brood mares that calls for our attention. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump, and this is most applicable to Matchem blood in the breeding of bloodstock. Before the arrival of Melbourne it appeared that the line of I.latchem stood in imminent danger of being snuffed out altogether. Since the coming of the blacksmiths nag, however, the Matchem presence has made itself more strongly felt; not that even now Matchem blood seems to be required in any too free dilution. But for an over worked, inbred Eclipse line the effect of a dash of Matchem is remarkable, even though good results may not come until the second remove. Sires of the Jalopin line, it would appear. an affinity in Matchem. Turf history is proof of this. Fair Play, you know, finds St. Simon in those great producing daughters of Rock Sand. So it goes, race horses are bred in the ame way they were yesterday and will be tomorrow, and. for my part, I am convinced that j.ot many years will come and go before the name of Ogden will appear close up in the pedigrees of many of the best of the winners. Inbreeding in the long run does not pay. and for this reason the retrogression for a time of the No. 6 family, and of this family Ogden a member. It is infrequent nowadays to find a really good horse which strains either top or bottom to the okl Bald Peg mare, but as certain as anything this same No. 6 line will soon forge to the front again, for it is now an oulcros.s for practically all other lines. Today, in conversation with Mr. John E. Madden, the subject of the backsliding of the Pocahontas blood came up; only another case of inbreeding, and this inbreeding to Pocahontas has at last resulted in a scant production of winners. Some day. 1 suppose, if it has not already taken place. Sr. Simon will be overdone. Inbreeding does not pay. There is no gainsaying this. . Kilwarlin. Ogdens sire, in addition to his Matchem descent, introduces a free strain of blood by the way of his dam. Flasty Girl, by Lord Gough, son of the avenger of Waterloo. Uadiateur. and this Gladiateur strain an outcross for the prevailing lines of Fxlipse now to be found in this country. Ogdens dam. Oriole, is a daughter of that good brood mare sire fiend Or, and. remember, it is Bend Ors incomparable daughter Fairy Gold which bred the champion Fair Play to the mating of the Matchem horse Hastings. Fenella. dam of Oriole, is by Cambuscan. bold, a stout-hearted son of Newminster and The Arrow, by Slane. and sire of that wonderful Hungarian race mare Kincsem, which, I believe, never knew defeat. La lavorita was by Monarque. sire of Gladiateur, giving to the pedigree of Ogden a double dose •:f this outcross blood. Constance, which follows, was a daughter of Queen Marys sire. Gladia tor. and Ogden. as much outbred as it hi possible for any horse to be. therefore, his blood will come to be more than ever esteemed as pass the fleeting years. The success of the St. Simon-Melbourne nick is proven abroad and also in this country, for i- not George Smith, the Kentucky Derby winner, a son of the Persimmon horse Out of Reach «;nd son of the Matchem mare Consuelo II.. by Bradwardine. son of Barcaldine? I therefore urn in hopes that some of these soon to be disposed of Hamburg Place Ogden mares may be chosen as mates for some well-bred horses of Galopin descent. ,. . .s„ i West Australian 7 i Melbourne 1 at. f solon -■ * Mowerina K , Arbitrator .27 brown, ls,;1 I Dartkogl dam ...J 5r*»*f*e ■ ■ y : ■ ■ ■ ::n, K f -i Daag.
