CLOSE FINISHES AT THE FAIR GROUNDS Marie Miller Victress in the Feature Race — Joe Goodman Outstays Get Em. NEW OBI.EANS. La.. January 23.— Friday as it was. and with nothing more to be expected than the customary Friday off-day card, there was a fine attendance at the Fair Grounds this afternoon, the pleasant weather and certainty of a fast track contributing to the enticement of the occasion. Although no high -class horses were in action, there was plentiful excitement, engendered by some eteaa and hotly contested finishes, beginning with the first raci-. This was the customary three-eighths for two-year-olds, with eleven starters, of which Tenite m- made a decided favorite, but there was gooil backing for John S. Reunion. Joe Goodman and Get Km. In a rousing finish Joe Goodman proved best by a half length, with Oct Km nosing the favorite out for second place and Aunt Deda a dose up fourth. The fourth was the main race of the day. a mile dash for a si .000 purse. Marie Miller was the favorite at slightly lower odds than Ballet Dancer II. at post time and made good, but only a half length better than Kulogy. which was pressing her hard anil gaining at the finish. W. W. Hastings has been known as a sprinter, but he appeared in a new role today and won at a mile anil seventy yards. He had his troubles in defeating Baigneur by a neck, with War Club a poor third. Sun Cod was a hfet priced favorite, but ran a poor race and was bcaleu off at the end. Harry Tnna. shortly before yesterdays racing began, acquired War Cod and Charlestoiiian and lxith of them won. It is said lie paid ss.000 for War Cod. According to the present intention of Mr. Cnna both War Cod and Charlestonian will be shipped to Tijuana next week. M. Oninn. who arrived yesterday from Kansas City, has added Mose by private purchase and he will be trained by Francis limine. S. A. Clapton has sold Simpleton to O. Bogers at private terms and is at present dickering with R. B. Brailhy for the purchase of Bullet Proof.
